As General Motors and Ford both ready themselves for the release of all-new electrified pickup trucks, Toyota is bringing one of its longest-running products up to date with a total overhaul. The full-size Tundra pickup will be all-new for the 2022 model year, but the automaker has been incredible tight-lipped about the truck. The image you see above is its first official “release” on the upcoming vehicle.
Details are scarce on the new truck and this is the first official “hint” Toyota has given us. If its lights are any indication, the 2022 Tundra will be quite the imposing pickup, with three orange grille- or hood-mounted lights and LEDs all around. Spy photographers have caught the truck out testing, but heavy camouflage and a careful driver kept most details hidden away.
Mysterious or not, the 2022 Tundra can’t come soon enough for Toyota. The current truck has been on sale, more or less unchanged, for almost a decade at this point and its underlying engineering has been around even longer than that. Toyota has moved mountains to keep it updated with new tech and convenience features, but General Motors, Ford, Ram, and even Nissan all offer trucks with newer and more compelling tech and safety features.
For years, the Tundra has been powered exclusively by a V8 engine, but the 2022 model year is expected to bring a turbocharged or twin-turbocharged V6 engine. We also expect the new truck to ride on Toyota’s TNGA-F platform, which features body-on-frame construction. There’s no word on whether or not the Tundra will be electrified in any way to compete with the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV and the Ford F-150 Lightning.
We’ll have to wait to see what, exactly, Toyota has up its sleeve with the 2022 Tundra. Beyond the teaser, no pricing or release date details have been released.
