Wireless phone charging is one of the latest casualties in the automotive industry’s semiconductor chip shortage as GM removes the feature from some of its 2021 and 2022 model year vehicles.
Earlier this morning, GM dealers were told that the Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon, & Cadillac Escalade would no longer ship with electronic steering column locks after July 5th. The news gets worse, however. The Suburban, Tahoe, and Yukon, along with other models will also lose wireless phone charging as well.
Due to the current global chip shortage, 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban along with 2021 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL will no longer have wireless phone charging as a feature. The problem even extends into 2022 models, such as the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave, and Cadillac XT5/XT6. There’s no date given when or if wireless phone charging will ever come back.
GM dealers are in the middle of a vehicle shortage, and the General is doing everything they can do to keep vehicles flowing to dealer lots so they can be sold. The company is even resorting to building vehicles and storing them until chips become available.
Vehicles built without wireless phone charging will be noted as such with an RPO Code, RS6 on the vehicle sticker. Vehicles without the option will be credited $75 on the MSRP.
The letter pushed to GM dealers reads like this:
