Shackle Install On My 04 Questions.

Recommended Posts

I've read a bunch of threads on shackle installation but had a few of my own that I didn't see answers to. I plan or would like to lower the rear of my 2004 sierra 2wd extended cab short bed by the 2" to level it out a bit but still leave some room for hauling sag.

1) with new shackles do you need new shocks? I have the electronic ride control with the electrical type shocks and don't want to mess with them or pull them out.

2) My bed is a sportside and I have read about needing to bend a seam in order to get a bolt out of the original shackle. anyone know if this is needed with a sportside with the fiberglass bed sides?

3) Do you guys cut the bumpstops, or do they sell newer ones that are shorter? I ask because several people have said that the bump stops will now be very close.

4) I'm assuming this si something that one could do with basic hand tools, jackstands, and a jack. What else would I be missing? How long did it take you guys?

5) Some threads have talked about the need for a shim kit for the pinion angle or carrier bearing being needed for the extended cab trucks. Does anyone have knowledge of this? I really don't feel like messing with driveline angles, nor do I want my driveline wearing faster than it otherwise would. I had an S-10 with double cardan shaft and had to replace it in December. I don't want to go through the same thing with my new full size.

Any insight would be helpful. I'm not opposed to tackling repairs and installations but this is my daily and I can't have it down because I screwed something up.
