What do I need to know to install mud flaps?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I have a 2002 Chevy Silverado and my wife got me the GM parts mud flaps from the dealership and I need to install them.  Is there anything I need to know before I do this?  I remember reading on here something about putting tape on before or the flaps will rub the paint off.  What's that all about?

How do you align them up and do I need to drill holes on the truck to install them? There is already 2 holes that are pre drilled on the truck.

Just want to check with you guys as I'm sure someone has installed the same type and may have tips or do's and don't advice.

thanks,

Brad

Directions are really basic.  Basically hold up to location you want and tap against screws to mark mud flap then drill holes in mud flap at mark. No tape came with them and just want to know if I need tape or not?

I have husky mudflaps and only had to drill 1 hole for each flap.  Mine didnt come with tape and i didnt use any.  The rear flaps do rub a little on the back but they are rubbing on the fender flare and not the paint and it is only noticable if you move the mudflap to expose where it is rubbing.  I would say why not use some of the 3m tape so proect from rubbing.  It wont hurt.  A little extra protection wont hurt anything

I installed the molded ones from GM on my 02 Silverado.  They did not come with tape and I did not use any tape.

No problems with the install no drilling at all the holes on the mud flaps lined up with the predrilled holes on the fender.

there was a bolt at the bottom of the fender I had to undo that is used to secure the bottom of the mud flap to the bottom of the fender.  Plastic fastening pins came with the mud flaps these went through the mud flap and secured into the predrilled holes on the fender.

You can have them on so fast your morning coffee wont even get cold.

I too have the Husky flaps.  They came with the tape.  I only used it on the front ones though.  The back ones did not seem to move like the front ones.  It was easy to put the tape on.  After I got to thinking about it though if the flaps will rub through the paint then they will also rub through the tape.  The fenders on the HDs in my case are painted and a plastic material so I am not to worried about exposing the metal due to rubbing.

Are the GM molded flaps available in plain without logo?

All the ones I've found have either Chevy or GMC logos.

I feel like 1 visible logo per side is enough, and the factory already got that covered.  I don't want to be one of those guys with Chevy logos all over the place.  ;)
