Installed my Westin Platinum CPS Nerf Bars

Recommended Posts

I installed my Westin Platinum CPS nerf bars this weekend and I can't say I'm overly impressed.  Not with the looks of them, as they look great and the bars themselves were perfect.

My beef has more to do with the mounting of them.  It seems a little chincy especially compared to the Smittybilt's I had on my Blazer which were all a one piece welded unit.  On those the front end bolted to the frame and the rear mount bolted over the rear leaf spring bolt.

These by comparison have these large mounting brackets which mount to the body mount of the cab.  These then require another brace that mounts to the frame also in order to make them sturdy.

Once torqued down to 65lb-ft like their instructions said, it works, just looks cheesy, that's all.  Also, I'd like to make mention that their instructions while giving a nice overall presentation, needs to work on picture clarity.  I had thought they shorted me the front bracket braces as the two remaining parts I had looked like the rear braces according to their instructions.  It wasn't until I got down there and was playing with it, that I realized DUH!!!  These ARE the front braces.

Otherwise, they look great and I tested them with my weight on them and they're fine.

I was going to make a post asking how complicated it was to install nerf bars but I think you answered my questions.  A local place wants $80 to install, I think I will try it myself.

Here's some info on installing the Westins.  Westin CPS install

Sorry to hear you had troubles with yours CMNTMXR81.  I agree though on the instructions, not the best in the world.  ???

I think the mounting hardware is pretty much crappy as a standard.  I have a Big Country set and they are the same way.

Smittybuilt is a little different I think.

I regret letting a local retailer talk me out of the Smitty's or the CPS.

No particular reason though, I just didn't get what I wanted.

Ah yes, some of these companies are great with their instructions...it's like I'm usually not in the best mood to begin with when I'm rolling around on the ground under the truck working in confined spaces, and when the instructions are a little iffy, just adds to the fun.

yep....not the easiest instructions to follow, but as long as you know what the finished product should look like, its not that hard.  Definitely not worth paying someone $80 to do it.....unless you are paying me the 80 bones, of course :)

The second one was installed in like 1/2 the time it took me to install the other.  Either way, only took a little over an hour to do so.  Good luck

I guess my problem was with the fact that the diagrams of the parts in the instructions didn't jive with the actual parts.  :)

Once I stared playing around it was a piece of cake.

I did note that the passenger side was a little more difficult to install timewise simply due to a lack of space to ratchet a Torque wrench in because of the shape of the brackets.

I got mine installed for free.  (black westins)

Probably next summer ill need to refinish them (powder coat) or replace.  They are scratched up pretty good.  At least they are saving my truck from being scratched
