GPS/Nav System

Recommended Posts

I've got a Garmin e-Map.  It is of the handheld type that runs on batteries.  Anyway, I bought the cigarette lighter adapter and the swivel car mount for it and have used it in my truck several times.  As long as it is far enough up into the windshield it works great (it has to receive a good signal...there is an external antennae I could buy but it works well where I have mounted it).  It came with software for the computer and you can download detailed maps of wherever you are going to be into the GPS.

All in all I like it alot but find that I don't have time to go exploring with it like I would like to.  It could definately get you out of being lost in the middle of nowhere though!  Very easy to use too...oh yeah, it has a cool feature that will tell you how fast you are going to make sure your speedometer isn't too far off.

Just my 2 cents.  Hope it helps.

I have a garmin 12map GPS unit.  It is a handheld unit that runs off of batteries, but it can also run off of your truck with one of those cig lighter cords.  I have one of those so when I am using it driving I don't drain my batteries.  I also have a small external atteana, that I put on the roof (magnetic), it really increases the reception of the unit, especially when inside a vehicle, since the internal attenna doesn't have good reception when it can't see the sky (i.e. roof).  You could just put it up far on the dash and it will work, but I like to have it with a safe reach when I am using it.  Anyways, the 12Map has a ton of built in maps, even has a list of services at every Interstate exit and all.  Also has speedometer, trip meter, etc.  It is very accurate (for a civilian model).  Also you can upload topo maps into its memory so you have an extremely detailed map of certain areas you may be going to.  Hope this helped.  I really like my GPS, it is fun to use when I have time to.  :)

I have the Garmin GPS V, it is also a handheld version but comes with a lighter cord and mount for the dash.  It has very good detailed maps and works within 10-15 feet accuracy in my truck (no external antenna).  You can change the screen from vertical to horizontal display, so it can be used as a handheld or vehicle based GPS.

Yeah I like those too.  My 12MAP gets 10-15 also without the external antenna, but since mine isn't one of those dash mounted kinds like your handheld, it is too hard to use like that, can't change the display.  So I picked up the small antenna for it, which makes it much easier.

Howdy All,

I have a Garmin Color StreetPilot and highly recommend it. They have a new model available called the StreetPilot III that has auto routing from point a to b and will automatically reroute you if you miss a turn. Directions are both audio and visual.
