My three favorite mods

First mod I bought was a UD pulley from Auto specialties..Tthis helped fuel mileage and I picked up some nice low end pick up.. Second was the HPP3 programmer from Hypertech..With my 6 litre 4x4 , I gained almost half a secon better ET at the track.. then to top off the other mods I added the ultimate performance air induction from www.ultimatepd.com   .This was  a great mod and I gained a little over two tenths off at the track and IT looks cool in smoked clear.. I think all three od these mods are great , low cost and easy to install.. I know with a few free mods  and these three together,, My track times have dropped over One full second.. Just wanted to pass it along.. I spent thousands of dollars on my 99Firehawk to drop this kind of ET.. These three mods were under a grand..:)

Redhawk,

What do you think of the overall quality of the ultimatepd intake?  I'm looking for something that will give my truck a little more power but not increase the cab noise too much.  Also, did you have any clearance problems with the intake?

Thanks,

Kevin

Kevin,

I feel the quality is great.. I made a mistake and bought two other intakes before I found the UPD..They were loud, hard to install and looked cheap.. The UPD is quiet, great power gain ,fits and installed fine.. I have seen four other people at our track with them and everyone loved thiers.. I have about a 1/2 inch from the fan shroud and the others I saw were the same.. I saw one guy say it took him and hour to install and he had clerance problems but that makes no sense to me.. There is only 8 screws to tighten in the whole kit..I think I spent 15 minutes on my install at the most.. I can do it in about 4 minutes now..:)  I gained lots of low end power and good mid range upto 5500 rpm.. The kit really looks factory as compared to the others, they were just  metal box with a cone filter in it.

Brooke,

If you don't mind me asking, what settings do you have in your HPP?  I've only adjusted for tires and shift firmness.  I'm still using 87 octane, so I didn't use the program for higher octane.  Do you?  I also haven't done anything with the rev limiter or shift points.

I have the 6.0 as well, and was curious as to what others were setting their shift points, etc. at with this motor.

I've seen settings for the 5.3, but not for the 6.0.  I guess I should get off my lazy butt and try different settings out :), but I don't have Atap either.

Thanks!

Steve,

I would adjust the rev. limitor and shift points on your truck.. I set the rev. limitor to 6200 rpm..That is still low for these roller motors.. I have my 1-2 shift at +6 MPH or max..It shifts at 6000 rpm on the 1-2 shift on ATAP.. I have the 2-3 at plus 10 mph(shifts at 5900 rpm) and the 3-4 at 0.. I have 4.10 gears with 285 tall tires on the truck.. The 160 T stat was also a big plus.. Yes, I run the tunning but I take it out in the hot summer months and just run 87 octane..

Are the 2002 HPP3`s out already?

Chevy4x4 trucks, yes thats the truck..

CMNTMXR81,

I had the Airaid first then the K&N..They both sounded like 4 barrels carbs and always seem to let a lot of hot air from the motor into them..Plus , they looked like cheap sheet metal under my hood of my $35,000 truck..  The Volant looks nice but I still like MY UPD a lot better.. I love the smoke clear look and my nitrous fit right on their nitrous tube version..Yes, it also has a sweet aftermarket sound .. Not to loud but just right ..IMO..

It used to take a lot longer without the mods but yes we have a 2.48 first gear and the 5.3 litres have a 3.08 gear..SO they really have some quick pick up .. With my 4.10`s and 285x75 tall tires.. Its like having 3.80 gears now and my speedo was off 4 MPH..The HPP3 did correct my speedo, so everything is fine.. I just put in that I have 32.5" tall tires and that seems to be perfect..

Our motors make peak power at 5200 rpm and that is were they shift at stock..Well, to use the optimum power of the motor you want to shift  above the peak power rpm..  I find that shifting at 5900 to 6000 rpm gives me that optimum power..

Yea, the Volant still has some of that 4bbl sound like when the secondaries open up, but I like that.  :D  Scares the sh*t out of th person next to you too!  :D

I do like that clear/smoked lid on the UPD setup.  :)

01hd, As to the speedo being off going from LT245's to LT285's, you speedo will be 7.752939656286334% too slow.

You'll have to wait for Hypertech (or another aftermarket co.)  to come out with a re-programmer to fix this as you can't re-flash them at the dealer since LT285 wasn't a factory optioned size.  If it were, you could.

RedHawk,

I have the same questions as DenaliAJ and one more.

Do you know if they make something in that line for the Dmax?  I'm told that some of the hesitation on the Dmax has to do with the electronic throtle position indicator.  And the chips seem to make the response better.

Do the 6.0's and the 8.1's have the same position indicator?

AJ,

I only run the crank pulley and haven`t noticed any discharge or sterring problems..Had my pulley for 30,000 miles now. If I idle for a long time, say 20 plus minutes in the 95 heat,, I do feel some AC loss.

Ak Deisel, Yes we have a TP sensor but I don`t know if its the same as the D max. The gas motors have no hesitation but you may be feeling turbo lag on your Dmax..I would think the chip , intake or exhaust mods would help the tubo spool faster,, thus decreasing hesitation.
