Subs

Recommended Posts

Probably my next project like others is to change my audio equipment and i m a fan of subwoofers so i d just be curious what everyone thinks about who makes a high quality unit

I remember doing a little test where i went to one store that sold MTX, Sony, Infinity and then i went to a place that sold kicker and i went back and fourth asking them questions about eachothers product.. I had them fighting behind there backs because one would say oh MTX would blow kickers highest line away where the kicker would say the opposite

Now i m looking at spending in the market of 3500 - 4000 in audio equipment so i can balance it out for each component..

I know the dealer who sells alpine units sells rockford fosgate subs, speakers, etc so what do you think of them???

Thanks in advance

Is it a good idea to buy subs used???

A friend of mine is selling his 3 JL Audio 10" subs with box and infinity amp for 800 bucks CDN..  Only problem is there about 2 years old and there not played softly..

I m going to talk to the custom stereo dealer here in town to see what he will charge for some of the stuff quoted here..

Thanks guys!

what are you trying to do? all out SPL? SQ? mixed?  the best thing to do for any audio equipment is to go demo it, do not rely on what people tell you, its your ears. i personally my DEI studio comps, best dollar for dollar set, compareable to high end bostons even.  sub be come  a whole different thing, many things you have to keep in mind: air space you have to use, price range, mounting depth, what kind of power you have to feed it. so maybe go to the places in your town start demoing some subs, write down the ones you like, then make a comparison list and start cutting it down.

Nexus hit the nail squarely one the head on this one!  But there is one thing he forgot.  When you go to demo a speaker, be it a component set, to subs, the dealer will usually power the speaker(s) with the most power he can.  Make sure you know, or have a general idea of how much power you want to run to the speakers.  Also, bring along some of the music you usually listen to on a daily/weekly basis.  When I first started out in car audio, all I would bring to demo a speaker was a bass CD.  Now when I go, I take the "Flashdance Soundtrack".  The first track is what alot of my friends use in competions.  From what I remember, around the 4th or 5th second into the song, there is a low note somewhere around 20-30 Hz.  If the dealer is running a high power amp to the subs, you'll definately feel your clothes vibrating.  Kinda cool!:D Good luck shopping, sorry for the long rant!

The basic idea of what i was trying to do was to get a rough idea with who to go with.. Everyone said there product was better than there competition next door so the only way to find out was to ask some of the stereo experts here who is trying to make any sale and who is looking at whats best for me.. Thats all

Thanks for the tip NeXuS1!  I did that a while back with one or two stores only to find they were too close to decide both quality and price were good ..

i forgot to mention the power thing, oh well. if you ever get around to it make sure the head unit they have running is set flat, you'll get a better idea of how it sounds. takes a bit of time to figure out how to set the treble and bass to zero or any other features on a different deck, but its useful to get a better oh the 'true' speaker.

I'll have to second the note on power and airspace.  I got a pair of brand new Boss 10" subs from a friend who was moving out of the country on business.  So I decided to build a box...the things need 3.5 cubic feet of sealed airspace each!  If I had anything but the old Suburban I would have had to compromise.  But, I built this huge box to the exact inside 7 cubic foot internal volume.  Then another buddy gives me an old Alpine amp.  Turns out it's too weak, and will clip on certain CDs if turned up too loud.

Looks like I'll be investing in a better amp...but it still sounds pretty darn good considering all I have in it is the cost of the material for the box...
