CB Radios

Recommended Posts

Got a couple questions for anybody on the fourm who has a CB in there truck.  To start off, what brand/model are you using, about what did it cost, and would you recommend it to others?  Are you using a whip antenna or a glass mount antenna?  I would also like to know where you guys with both C/K and Silverado pickups are mounting your CB's at?

Thanks.

don't have one myself, but while in texas, i saw a truck with a 10 foot whip mounted to the toolbox in his bed.  i was really curious and peeked in through his window, and he had it mounted in the driver's side right under the dash next to the center console.   i held my old cobra up in mine and there was no way my knees would fit underneath it.  i considered mounting it sideways on the passenger side mounted right to the center "island."  right before i drilled the holes, i bought a jeep and decided that it would be more useful there.

Hey,

I know i dont have a CK or Silverado but i thought i would offer my opinion..

From what people talk about cobra is probably one of the best makes for CB radios.. I personally have the brand from Radio Shack..  Its a fairly simple radio, it ran for around 80 bucks CDN.  For antenna i m using a magnetic roof antenna.  I actually get a good distance from it.. I get about 2 1/2 mile range which is way enough for me..

For all of the mounting places from all that i ve seen its mostly under the center console.. One or two i have seen they have bolted it to the top of the dash but all they do is talk on the radio...

I'd really like to mount a CB under the center console like you mentioned, but I have a factory cupholder right above that area and don't really want the radio to get wet.  Might not be a good situation!

Maybe by the time I have enough money for a radio, I will have thought of a good place to mount it?

I've got two Cobras, each worked great while they worked, but I think my Blazer did something to each of them as they will not transmit anything now.  I don't think it will take much to fix, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.  Be sure to get one with a weatherband on it, I was using that more than the CB part.  Also get whips, I have a magnetic mount one that is worthless.

I asked earlier where one would put one in a C/K truck, didn't get many good ideas.  A headliner was mentioned, but I hate those things so that was out for me.  I'm interested on any mounting places that anyone can come up with.

I am in the same boat, I have the cup holder under the center, the one that came in 94's. The only other place is beneath the ashtray but then how ya gonna use your plug. I have seen a lot of guys mount themon the drivers side of the 4wd shifter, I dont think i would do that though,  I think it would bother my leg. You could mount it on the bottomside of the cupholder, I have seen then like that, but I see your point about gettin wet. I would personally put dual whips on a truck.

In my 97 had it mounted under the ash tray and it worked great. As far as glass mount I had one of them and they are ok as long as whoever your talking to is not very far away - good for traveling together but thats about it.

  • 1 month later...

I have a cobra CB and I made a custom mount that fits right over the drivetrain hump

The casing took about an hour to make and all I did was cut a piece of sheet metal and bend it.  It can be done with simple hand tools.  I mounted it to the truck w/ sticky velcro, that way I can remove it if I want.  As for the whips I put the mounts on the little rings at the front of the bed and ran the coax through the large drain holes and in the cab via these opening between the cab and bed.  If you have any more ???'s email me.
