Remote starter

Recommended Posts

Hear in Anchorage, it's mighty cold in the morning.  I want to install a remote starter in my truck, so it will be nice and toasty when I get in.   I found a remote starter made by Bulldog Security for $45.  Has anyone installed one on there truck and was it difficult? Thanks in advance.  :)

I have installed several remote starters, including one on a '98 full-size chevy truck, which would be similar to yours. how are you with electrical and wiring type repairs. many people are intimidated by wiring/electronics and don't want to attempt these. if you have a basic knowledge of wiring these aren't that bad. follow the directions and double check each connection, but I will warn you now, your truck probably has passlock theft protection on it, it must be bypassed to use the starter, this complicates it a little, there are kits available to bypass it, just be prepared. I installed 2 bulldog security starters, they worked fine, you can go to their website for a wiring chart to help with the install.

I just got mine installed last night.  It works like a charm.  I got mine put on for 187 but that was after a discount that they gave me because the forgot my appointment was on sat. it would have ran me about 230.  the only thing i have found I dont like about it is that i need the factory remote to turn the alarm on.  I got the trc remote start/keyless entry system.

I was just out at the store and they had the Bulldog RS114 for sale for $49, so I bought it since I was thinking about it last week.  Now I'm wondering if I need to bypass the passlock or anything....  Anyone know?  (2000 Chevy Z71)  Will I still be able to use my factory remote to unlock the doors?  The starter came with keyless entry and all that too.  Do I have to hook up all the functions, or can I just do the remote start?  I like how the horn honks and the parking lights flash when you lock the doors with the factory remote.

Thanks,

Matt

you can install just the start function if you wish, you will have to bypass the security system on your truck, find out which system you have, because they have made changes to them over the last couple years.

you can also hook up the other features without disabling the factory remote, it's just a matter of getting the wiring right, check out their website for help with locating the wires needed.

Here's the lowdown on Bulldog......  You have to get an extra module to bypass the Passlock II.  It's part number 791, available from their website (www.bulldogsecurity.com) for an extra $24.83 + $5 shipping.  I just ordered mine this afternoon and they said 3-5 days to get it.  We'll see.  I read thru the directions and it seems pretty straight forward.  I probably won't have time to install it for a while, so I don't know when it'll get done.
