Any Maintenance work needed at 12,000 miles?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, just wanted to ask the experts if any sort of maintenance work is needed at 12,000 miles, other than oil changes. My truck is only 6 months old and the miles are almost all highway miles. My last oil change at 11,000 miles I switched to Mobil 1 5/30 with a PF58 filter. I don't have the cold start knock yet, at least I don't think I do. I do get a slight ticking sound for 5 to 10 seconds after a cold start, occasionally. Since switching to the Mobil 1 I haven't even noticed that, but the weather has generally been warmer, although we have had several mornings that have been close to or below freezing. I guess mostly what I'm wondering about is would it be a good idea to change fluids in the transmission, rear end, transfer case, etc.?  I know I could look in the owner's manual, but I feel I will get better answers from you guys. I plan on keeping this truck a long, long time and want it to last. Thanks for any help!

westex39,  I am using the PF 58 because I read on here one time that the only diff between the two is that the 59 has some kind of a valve in it, which is not necessary due to the way the oil filter sits in a vertical position. The store had a good sale on the 58's, and didn't have any of the 59's so I got them, and it seems to work just fine.

With only 12k miles, just make sure the fluids are topped off.  Did you grease the front end?  I would suggest doing that every oil change.  IMHO I would use PF59 instead of the 58.  The 58 does have a different antidrainback valve than the PF59.  Although, in general, this shouldn't have a big effect, I would not want to risk it with a new $30k+ truck.  Have the tires balanced and rotated for even wear if you haven't done so already.  Other than that no more maintainence now.  If mostly highway miles, tranny fluid and t-case fluid don't require changes until 50K.  If you tow quite a bit or dip the rear axle down a boat ramp often, I would suggest changing the rear axle lube after each boating season and tranny/t-case fluid around 24K miles.  What service intervals are you following?  The owner's manual is an excellent source of info.  If you haven't gotten one already, pick up the Helm repair manual.  Happy truckin'!

carguru thanks for the help. I've actually only greased the front end once, and I've changed the oil at 1000 miles, 5000, 8,000, and 11,000. I didn't know if it was necessary with every oil change. Maybe I'll do that this weekend. Thanks for the tip on tire rotation also. I was planning on that, but it slipped my mind. There isn't even any noticeable wear on my tires yet so hopefully it will be soon enough. I haven't been towing with it yet, and haven't been in any water, so I guess I'm ok for a while. Thanks again for the help!
