Not on GM but noise

This one has me puzzled, my son has a 92 Toy 4X4 pickup with the 5 speed in it, he was driving down the road today and all of a sudden it would not pull its self.  I went to check on it and thought that he knocked it into netural or something, but I checked it and it was in 2 hi, when it was in 1st gear and you let out on the clutch it would sound like you were grinding the gears as if the clutch was not engaging or disengaging.  It would not move under its own power we tried 4 hi, 4 lo and even put it into netural to see what it would do.  Does anyone have any ideas???? HELP ME PLEASEC:

Can you move in any gear?  Did you try second or with much effort 3rd or reverse?   I would say it sounds like the tranny if you can start in any gear but 1st.  Does the truck stall in 1st when you let the clutch out and not give it gas?  Or do you just get the grinding?

It will not move under its own power in any gear or any drive, only noise is sometimes grinding.

Here is some guesses:

 

Broken/bent shifter linkage...

Clutch is gone...

-or-

Tranny or T-case is junk...

As Shaners said.  I would also check in that order.  Did this happen all of a sudden or gradually worsened?
