fuel filter / pump

Recommended Posts

Nope, pump did not quit, but I know that the Vortecs have the pump / filter assembly in the tank as one unit. I was hoping I wouldn't have to drop the tank, and now that I know where the filter is I won't bother with the pump  :D

Thanks

I haven't had to mess with the pump in a while (knock on wood), but the in-tank filter attached to the pump, from what I remember, was just a mesh screen.  It would be a real PITA to have to mess with dropping the tank.  I guess if you had nothing else better to do.... LOL!

No thanks, I'll replace the filter for now and see what happens. I'm getting some pinging on accelleration on a grade and since the filter hasn't been replaced in 124K, I thought it might be a good idea   :D

There are two filters on our trucks, like Car mentioned, the one in the pump is merely a mesh screen.  Otherwise the mainline fuel filter is along the drivers side, inside the frame rail.

Be thankful you don't have a newer Dodge truck or Nissan.  They DO have the filters inside the tank with the pump.

Mission accomplished  :D

Filter has been changed and I can tell the difference already. Pings have seemed to disappear as well, seems like I have more umph now. This is the first time I've ever replaced a fuel filter on any of my vehicles  :D

How can you check if the old filter was dirty or not?

Thanks guys!!

Tap the end on the ground (preferably the outlet side as that was the direction of flow).  If tapping it doesn't net a lot of crud, you can always take a hacksaw to it.  :D

I bet a lot of crud falls out.  All that crud was blocking free fuel flow which was then starving the engine a little.
