not engine related but didn't see the right sectio

Recommended Posts

i didn't see any other sections addressing the oddball s**t that goes wrong with these things so bear with me.  ever since i bought my '94 (6.5 turd-o-diesel) i have had problems with the wipers.  they come on just fine but then they just go stupid.  intermittant doesn't work, they just keep going and going and going....  even when i turn them off, they keep running for anywhere from 5sec-5minutes!  when they finally do stop, they park just any ol' where.  straight up, half way, all the way over to the end of the sweep.  geez, what a turd!  anybody else seen this?

My friend's diesel Suburban did this. He would just reach outside in the pouring rain and pull them to get them on. When he turned them off he would just hold em down untill they gave up. He was going to fix it but he flipped it! ??? Not much advice here. Hope you get it fixed. Mabye a bad connection somewhere?? ???

I've got a '95 and had to "kick start" mine a few times. I hear there is a wiper relay that has some kind of internal metal contact that frequently goes bad from corrosion of some kind. It could be that has a bad connection on the relay, then when it finally makes contact, it arcs and sticks the contacts together so they don't shut off when their supposed to. If it's not that, its possible it could be the wiper motor itself. I know there is usually a park mode built into the motor assembly so they can only shut off at only one given point in the revolution of the motor driven gears which drive the wipers. Mine hasn't done it enough times to go digging yet, but that is the first thing I plan to do when I get to it.

95, believe you nailed it right on.  Sounds like it might be both things.  Usually if it doesn't find park, it is the motor itself.  Contacts probably worn inside.  The wiper relay is probably causing the run on condition.

It's definetely the wiper control module. It's on the wiper motor under the black plastic cover with the three torx screws holding it on. Take the cover off and unplug the wires that are going to the board, then look at all the sodder connections for small hairline cracks and if you find any resodder them with a pencil point sodder gun, or a regular sodder gun if your careful. Reinstall and try it, if the wipers work normally you found all the cracks, if they don't wipe right try again. It takes about 5 minutes to get to the wiper "control board" off, a pretty easy mod. My 93 Z71 had the same problem after purchasing it and I tried to fix them with the above procedure only to end up buying the control board at my local GM dealer for 48.00....and they have them in stock.... LOL

Good Luck with your wiper project  :D

My sisters 78 GMC has a gremlin in its wipers they turn on and off with the switch each and every time, and work on mist just fine BUT you will be driving down the road and not have used the wipers in a day, week, or even a month and they will come on and make one swipe and then stop!!!!  The first time it happened to me she had not said anything about it and we were in New Mexico on I-40 at about 3:30AM when it happened and I almost ran off the road trying to find out what happened.  She still has this truck and it still does it to this day.
