Is your 2002 model year 5.3 engine smoking on cold start and using oil?

Please call Jim Kellerstraus of Region 8 EPA, Air Emissions Enforcement in

Denver (303) 236-9505, to let him know your problem. He needs to document

other people, besides myself, having this oil-smoke problem. EPA will do an

investigation and require a recall of the vehicle if needed. You should

Best advice I can give is to document all trips to the dealer about this

problem. The Lemon Law is strict and my dealership failed to give me

paperwork each time I was in. This problem will not go away and if you

persist in following the Lemon Law to recover your lost value or a

replacement vehicle, documentation is crucial.

Sounds like a simple valve stem guide problem.  Small Block V8's and 4.3L V6's are notorious for this.
