Ecu Reprogramming

Recommended Posts

Since virtually all gasoline (at least in the NE) is 10 % ethanol, my HWY MPG has dropped from 20-21 down to 17.5 . I understand that ethanol has less energy and I will NEVER get back to what I had with straight gas, but is there a way to reprogram the ECU to compensate (as much as possible) for the new fuel mix ? And yes I have new filters, oil and plugs and its the same tires I always had. All I'm looking for is a software package I can load on my laptop or a company that makes a standalone programmer, not whining about how the oil companies are scr$%ing us or other non technical responses.

Thanks

Ethanol will never give you the same mileage as gasoline. That is one of the downsides of ethanol. There is no way to compensate for that. Ethanol does have a higher octane than gasoline. There is no way to compensate for that, without additives. The only way to get the best of both worlds, mileage and ethanol, grow some corn and don't drive.

OK, the reason why I posted the same question is that NO ONE answered it. I know you will NEVER get the MPG from the ethanol mix, but there should be an ECU tweak to optimize for the change. ALL I wanted to know was if anyone knew of a software or hardware solution. Since none of you seem to understand what I was asking for I will stop posting the same question.

a vehicle runs by converting potential chemical energy (fuel) into mechanical energy (moving forward). therefore, the more chemical energy in the fuel the more mechanical energy you can convert from it (yes there are VE issues like compression ratios, valve timing events, head flow, etc). if the fuel does not contain as much potential chemical energy you wont get as much mechanical energy out of it. this means you will not go as far on a gallon of it.

sure you can bump compression ratios and timing numbers to optimize the vehicle. getting a tune would put you in the right neighborhood

Are you asking if you can reprogram your ECU so that when you use ethanol you won't expereince a drop in fuel economy? All the reprograming in the world isn't going to make ethanol combustion produce any more energy than it does. If it was that simple, I'd reprogram mine to run on 10% happy thoughts.

Maybe some fine tuning will help, but you're not going to get the same milage as gas straight up.

Hmmm...

My point was, if you aren't getting an answer to your question, you can reply in the same topic, not that you should stop seeking the answer to your question. :D

I like your footer....i can sometimes be abrasive too. What I am trying to find out is.....given that 10% ethanol requires an different air/fuel mix and fuel mapping for max efficiency (and yes i understand that it will NEVER get back to what it was) is there a tune out there specifically for the new mix ?
