Performance Maf Sensors

I hear people talking about the need of replacing OEM MAF sensors with better ones.

The talk is that you will need to do this mod eventually after you've done intake / throttle body / echaust / etc. to ensure better reading once you get better flow in/out the engine

I will greatful if any one would like to share the experience/knowledge

thanx in advance!

That is a stock MAF with no screen. Pointless. Unless your running a monstrous air intake hooked up to a monstrous after market throttle body on a fully built engine pumping in more air than imaginable on a stock set up, and the stock unit won't fit because of that intake tube, it's pointless.

they're pretty useless. most aftermarket MAF's are the same size as the stock one, the difference is that there is programming "embedded" in the MAF that tells your PCM that it's colder than it really is so it dumps more fuel creating more power. Hence, you get the biggest gain (which is minimal anyway) when you do a true CAI w/a MAF. Save your money and get a custom tune that could do the same thing and more

now i've ordered intake + throttle body spacer + edge evo... will it help??

I'd send the throttle body spacer and the evolution back. You can get a cheaper and better tune on the dyno, and throttle body spacers are equal to that MAF mentioned earlier. But if I was forced into buying a hand held programmer, I guess I'd choose the evolution.

+1

...on a side note. Since everybody wants to buy TB spacers, I need to start making 'em. $5 worth of material to make $45 of profit.

I with you on this one.

The only thing i would use a spacer is for N02 nozzle. MAF is worthless, tunning is the only way to go with a nice CAI. The rest well like Schmid said.

Right now my mpg has gone down big time since i swaped a CAI. I have to reprogram it to get the full benifits.

Airflow changes on the vehicle with a CAI, Exhaust, and headers.

Everything you add to your vehicle that has something to do with hp gain needs to be compensated for by the ECM. Once i get my headers, and camshaft in there, i will have it dyno tuned. Once that is done, Im set. All together the tune, headers, exhaust, CAI, and camshaft should net me about 80RWHP if not more. If i get to mill the heads and raise the compression to 10.5:1 then that would be another 10hp. All in all its better to go the rout im going then to waste money.

Pretty good explanation. Doesn't the aftermarket MAF sensor fool the PCM into thinking it has a much colder intake charge hence dipping into the IAT spark advance table? By adding the couple of * spark advance you most likely will net some HP on a fairly stock truck. That's my take anyway.

I see your mods and imagine your max out your stock MAF in the upper RPM range as well. I rescaled my MAF frequency table to compensate for this (controversial but it works for me).

Most people who plan on outflowing the stock MAF typically go to a SD (speed density) tune which doesn't use the MAF calculations for its fueling and such. Some radical guys that want to still have the MAF tuning ability try the 100MM Lingenfelter unit. Heard mixed reviews about that one.

If you are a stock truck looking for some fun easily added modifications then an aftermarket MAF is fine. I would prefer to spend my $$$ on a custom tune that will deliver like 2-3x more bang for the buck.

Thanks for the info Kevin!

custom tuning is down below in my list since I'm looking for more control in performance/economy. I think edge evo is enough for the time being.

Since performance MAFs do fool the PCM regarding air temp (only?); does the car get affected in a bad way because of inaccurate figures? maybe not balanced A/F ratio?

If I knew all this info I wouldnt have bought the MAF - returning it now will cost me some $$$ so I'm still thinking if it's worth keeping it. I got it for $260

how much MPG/HP gains should I expect for the MAF? :D
