Parts In

Schmids5.3l

Depending on whether or not I take the heads off to swap the cam, I have all the parts in. If I do take the heads off, I still need head gaskets and head bolts. Head bolts are controversial on whether or not they can be re-used, but it's common knowledge they are torque to yeild, meaning the stretch when torqued. If they are torqued too much they are beyond the point of no return. Anyways I took some pics of the parts, the swap will probobly be done the weekend after next weekend, because I have duty next weekend. Luckily I d**n near broke my ankle yesterday thanks to a rageing thunder storm that came out of no were, and won't participate in the running part of the PT test. I can barely walk on it today.

Here's the pics.

Here's everything, Comp 265 cam, Trickflow 7.4 chromolly hardend push rods, LS6 springs, crank seal, timing cover gasket, new crank bolt, and h20 pump gasket. ALL gaskets on these motors are reuseable minus the head gaskets, I got new ones for insurence. I can either buy a new set of 5.3 heads from a junk yard and have the speed shop clean them and put in the new springs and swap the cam/heads in a day, or just put the new springs in myself and save $100 on head gaskets and bolts and take all weekend.

Yes for the red truck! my only truck! I did have an old 88 f150 but I gave it to my old man. Wishing I kept it now!

I estimate low low 14's, esp with these temps. A guy on PT.net had the same cam in an extended cab with open 3.42 gears and a small stall, I think around 2400, and ran 14 flat. It's a good strong cam for daily driving on a stock converter, which is what I was looking for. Anything higher would need a higher stall.

I agree with that nut above me here. It's gonna be cool when you have it done. A little extra grunt is going to be nice.

EDIT: MY GOODNESS! I just realized that we all three drive Red Reg Cabs... What does that say?

Rub a dub dub dub....3 men in a red reg cab...LOL

This is a pretty sweet project Sam....your gonna have to take progress photos....maybe a slow motion video of when you push the cam in...everything is sexier in slo-mo.

BTW...re-usable gaskets and used head bolts are for fags...real men buy new s**t anyway...LOL even if you don't need it...you sit it in the corner of the garage to show the guys your wifes friends date when she has them over for parties and stuff.

I like having obscure stuff....that I pull out when someone starts talking about cars, just to see if they do know what they're talkin about.

I guess it says we have good taste in trucks.:dunno: you guys kill me  Aiden I'll take many pictures of the swap. Infact I just put new batteries in her digital camra for these pics, so I know its good! I'm not sure about a slow motion video of the cam going in tho LOL. I guess I'll keep the old cam springs and rods for trophies!

My old man got a spring compressor, his shop has air tools, so I just need to find 5/16" dowel rods to hold the lifters, and wait 11 or 12 days, depending on friday or saturday. I cant wait. Dyno tune shortly after.

Any old parts that aren't of any value get bolted to the ceiling.

It's a rule.

Thats a good idea, but what about the wall?? My brother would probobly attack me with a sledge hammer if a cam, pushrod, or anything for that matter dropped on his toy...

No running for you young man!

Are you running headers yet? If so... what kind of gains did you get with em?

:):) I can hobble along at a good pace, but it would probobly look like Forrest gump with his leg braces :) I have to walk on my heel so it doesn't hurt like hell.

I don't have headers, yet. Thats probobly next actually, I'm looking into either Stainless works or Pacesetters. Stainless works are twice the price ($750+), but their made out of stainless steel and are probobly the best on the market in terms of quality, tied with dynatechs. I'd guess gains with 1 7/8 headers are in the 15hp range on a stock motor.

Use Bigger bolts...or bolt some steel plate up there and weld everything to it...LOL

I think that ankle may need some welding too by the sounds of it. I know that feeling all to well man...And PT tests suck, especially the running.

:ughdance: It does suck, I gotta wear a soft cast and a big d**n boot ontop of it for a week, and I gotta take 2 weeks off work. The cam swap might come sooner than 2 weekends from now, there's no way Im sitting here for 2 weeks. I got a note, so no PT test!! Well, no running portion atleast.

I hope to see the difference of the new cam, im thinking about a 30hp to the rear wheels. and that should put you in the 14.5 but hopeing you go warp 2. Good luck with the project. Im jelouse i have to wait for the aftermarket to come up with a cam for the AFM.
