Earning its keep

This afternoon I hauled off our first load of fat cattle to the salebarn.  Pretty much shows the whole reason why a half ton won't do, there is a lot of weight in these fat steers and heifers, and when they walk around in that trailer they really throw it around.

These boys and girl will soon be hamburger and steaks.

Good photos, JP.  Most of the farmers around here just skip over 3/4 tons and go for 1 tons since they're even more durable.  Alot of them use non-dually F350s and a now I'm starting to see alot of GM 2500HD 1 tons.  I guess Dodge is going to make a 1 ton non-dually for 2003 too.

My fathers neighbor (Ford guy) has an F350 V10 single and an F350 dually diesel!

Personally, I wouldn't even think of pulling a fifth-wheel trailer with a 1/2 ton pickup. That's just asking for trouble, especially when you can buy a good 3/4 or 1 ton for the same amount as a 1/2 ton.

Hillhound, our truck before this one was a K3500, but we dropped back to a K2500 as we couldn't find an extended cab one ton with the limited selection when we bought this one.  A dually is out of the question here, they simply don't go through mud the same way SRWs do, they run down crop when going down rows, and are just a #### of a lot harder to drive.  I do have to say I think this truck handles the trailer a bit better with its extended wheelbase (although I had to start all over and relearn how to back up with the trailer on), but I do miss the larger brakes that come on the one ton.
