Intake Questions.

hey, I'm looking to buy a new cold air intake for my 2002 chevy silverado 1500 ext-cab. I want a nice sound, hp increase, and mpg increase. The obstacle that I have to overcome would be C.A.R.B because I live in Ca. what do you guys recommend for an intake on my truck? Thanks

I installed my Outlaw intake last night, and it has independent dyno numbers to prove it's superior over the AEM and stock setups. It's a closed box setup not much louder at all over stock, but the advantage is it's really pulling in cold air, it flows very well and it's a closed box setup so you won't lose any torque in fact I really think I gained a bit down low. The specs say it's optimized to start giving you more power at 3000K rpms where the other intakes only start giving power at very high rpm.

ok, so what's the difference between a FIPK or whatever and a 77 series K&N?

Considering the advances in Intake design technology, the wider use of closed air boxes, and the number of companies changing to non-oiled filters, the K&N Products just seems antiquated to me! No offense, but it's a tube with a filter stuck on the end of it! How hard was that to design?

 

I would look at the Outlaw, GMPP, or Volent for a good closed air box design, or AEM for a good open design with a dry filter! BTW, both the Outlaw and the GMPP use dry filters as well...

The difference between the 2 K&N's?? One has a plastic intake tube, the other aluminum.

Take a look at Trueflow. I am not completely sold on their foam filter yet but their aif tube and silicone connection boots are all great quality, fit great and look really nice under the hood. They retain the factory air box.

 

I have taken the foam filter out for a while to compare the MPG and Oil Analysis vs a stock filter. As of right now, the paper filter has reduced my MPG by almost 1 MPG. I plan to do an oil analyis on my next oil change to see if my silicone levels drop over the analysis that was run with the TF filter.

I got a S&B Cold air....its supposed to flow like 40% more air than the factory....something like that its been a while since i got it.....but it was quality....plastic tube from the throttle body over to the cold air box that is also plastic... its has an oiled k and n type filter under a clear lid so you can see and the whole far end is open to draw air in from the fender area

I have the true flow on my 5.3 and it is an excellent product. It utilizes the stock air box which flows more than enough air than the engine needs, so it is a little louder than stock. noticed more low end and throttle responce. goes nicely with the corsa exhaust and wait4me tune. The trueflow.com website gives alot of good info... I stopped using k&n in my vehicles because it really does let alot of dirt through. I went to clean my MAF one day on my old truck and it looked like hell. The k&n fipk's in my opinion are not a cai because they let warm air in from the engine as opposed to a sealed unit like outlaw, trueflow etc... That little rubber seal they use is pathetic. just my .02

Who cares? Cool sounds are for ricers. I never had anything except outlaw on my truck, besides a K&N Panel filter on the stock system. If you already have an AEM Bruteforce I'd keep it on, it's a good system. If I couldn't get an Outlaw or Volant, AEM would be my next bet, tied with: VR6 ram air, or K&N panel with AirRaid intake tube.

 

Plus with Outlaw you have a 4" hole in the bottom of the airbox, ripe and ready for some ram air action.

I had the AirAid Jr (replacement tube and filter, but retains the factory air box), but I had to remove it. It sounded good under acceleration, but that tube gave an annoying drone when towing my boat.

 

I went with the AEM brute force and no more drone. It's not a closed box system and does just have a thin wall, but you remove the plate under the air box to draw air in forward of the fender. According to my Scan Gauge my intake temperature is only 1-2 deg above the outside air temperature so it is not drawing in engine air when moving. I do notice that if you sit for a while with the truck idling the intake temperature does go up relative to the the outside air temperature, but that's true of the stock airbox as well.

Chris if you are getting intake temps at 1 to 2 degrees above outside temps, this is great. My TrueFlow set up with the factor box seems to get my intake temps to about 10 degrees above outside temps according to my scan gauge. I have never checked it on a cool day but only when it was mid to upper 90s outside.

 

I will be towing my camper in about 2 weeks for a 140 mile trip. It should be somewhat cooler by then and I will have to check it again.

I found it surprising as well because most on this site swear up and down that unless its a sealed airbox you'll ingest hot engine compartment air and it's not a "cold air intake". It does go up if you sit there and idle, but as soon as you start moving again the intake temperature is back down to a few degrees above the outside air temperature.

How much sound is lost with a closed box like Outlaw vs a BruteForce? I'm planning on getting a Outlaw but is the sound much different? enough to take a seconed look at the 2

 

In my experience the tube design has more to do with the intake sound. The AirAid tube gives quite a growl when under acceleration. I removed it because it had an annoying resonance whenever the tranny downshifted on the highway to maintain speed while towing.

 

I now have an AEM brute force and really like it. It is a little louder than stock, not as loud as the AirAid tube, but does not have that annoying resonance.
