Backup Camera Installed In Nbs

Recommended Posts

I just finished the installation of a backup camera in the rear spoiler of my tailgate. I put a factory Nav w/DVD in about a month ago and installed the cable at that time for the camera. Installation was very easy, took about an hour to do.

no offense to you sir, but in my opinion, if somone needs a camera in their vehicle to back up, you shouldn't be driving

No offense taken, obvoiusly, everyone has the right to their own opinion and to draw thier own conclusions. One might also consider that those who tow frequently might want the ability to keep an eye on things while going down the road without having to constantly turn around to check things, or that when you live in a house with 3 young children, it sure is nice to have an "extra measure" of comfort that neither they nor their bikes or toys are in your path. Some things just make more sense when looked at from another's perspective! :shakehead:

Using the factory Navigation unit. Mine has the rear seat DVD and allows the use of the rear camera. The picture is quite good. It is color and the camera has IR sensors around the outer edge to allow for night time use also. This camera has about a 120 degree viewing angle, so you could almost stand at the taillamp and still be seen.

How much did your Nav/DVD cost? Did you already have the bose system?

I already had the Bose system with the DVD and rear seat screen. I purchased the NAV unit on Ebay for about $950.00. That included the unit, the map DVD and the Vehicle Speed Sensor wire/plug from JP Customs. The factory GPS antenna was another $45. I installed it myself and had to take it to the dealer for them to program it to the truck (1/2 hr., $40). About $1035 +/-.

I think it's a pretty smart idea. Sure, you can look behind your truck for kids/animals/whatever before you get in...but, kids are fast, so are animals. A lot can change in the few seconds it takes to back up. It happens with tragic results. With the height of these vehicles, especially with the factory rake, you could miss an adult even with being cautious.

Why do people care what you chose to do with your vehicle, anyway? :shakehead:

My .02,

I think the back up camera would be nice for backing up to a trailer and aligning the ball to the trailer tongue. I always have to get out and check, sometimes 2-3 times, before I am able to drop the trailer tongue onto the ball. My boat is heavy with a tongue weight of about 300 lbs and I have to leave the wheels chocked since my driveway is sloped, so I have to back the hitch up fairly precisely. I eventually ended up denting my 2000 GMC's rear bumper due to this. I won't let that happen to my 07, so I guess I will be very careful and keep checking frequently since I do not have the BUC and cannot justify the cost, especially since I do not have NAV/DVD.

Other than this, I don't think I would ever use it.

I tow, and I have a kid, so I know about toys. Simple, check your side mirrors while towing, and check the back of your truck before getting in.

Little kids can be behind the truck by the time you get in, start it and put it in reverse. I have an 8 year old and two 11 month olds. Definately want to make sure they aren't back there. I'm working on installing a Visualogic back-up camera above the hitch on my NBS Sierra HD. It will feed the singla to a Pioneer AVIC Z2. I have a camera on the back of my '05 Sierra. That makes it sooooo easy to hook up a trailer. I don't have to keep getting out to get on the ball. I'm usually under the trailer on the first try. I also have one on the back of my 32' car hauler. That lets me see who or what is back there. Works great when backing up. We can probably drive these trucks without a camera back there but you'll never complain that you can see to much.
