Getting exhaust done

Recommended Posts

I'm getting the Dmax to be much louder next week. I am getting a straight pipe installed and a 5" rolled end slash cut tip put on for $100. I have heard that they are pretty loud, but haven't heard one myself. Has anyone heard this or have a sound clip of it somewhere?

Hi Roofer!

I had a straight put on my DMAX along with a 4.5 inch chromed "cannon" tip. I only kept it on the truck for about two weeks before ordering a Banks Monster system...couldn't stand the noise! If you are looking for an exhaust that will wake the neighbors with an obnoxious BRAP, then the straight's the way to go. No, I'm not really knocking that...some folks really like the volume, but I personally prefer the sound of the Banks over the straight. So, try the straight, and if you don't like it, put a Dynomax or some other muffler on it. You'll still be shelling out less cash than with a Banks or some other replacement system, plus you'll be lowering your EGT's by lopping off that restrictive stock muffler. I say go for it!

If you'd like to hear a sound clip of the Banks on my truck, open my pics and click on the hyperlink below the first truck pic, or go to the Banks album and click on the link provided there.

Good luck!

My buddy with a new Cummins put a new exhaust on his truck along with a "Bullet" muffler.  The new muffler is a straight through design and is stainless.  It looks good and has just enough sound deadening to take the "bite" out of the exhaust note.  His turbo spools up much faster (sooner) and you can actually hear it better when it comes on and when the waste gate (or whatever it is) opens up when he lets off the throttle...

You can get these mufflers 3" inlet/outlet.  The muffler is 6" diameter, and comes in 16", 20" and 24" lengths.

I am getting it done tomorrow. It took awhile to get the parts in. I am looking to have a loud truck again. My '98 Z71 was pretty loud, then my '00 Z71 wasn't loud at all. I want to get back to a louder exhaust.

I went and looked at the tip today. It is frickin' huge! Stainless, chrome and 5" around. It is gonna look sweet! I will have picks asap. I will also comment on the sound. This is the first Dmax in my area with any type of aftermarket exhaust. It will be fun to see reactions. I live in a small race car town (just a dirt track), and these people are nuts for this stuff.

Gotta disagree with ya there...the entire system is indeed 3.5 inch (at least my truck certainly is), because I had to order a length of 3.5 inch stainless in order to splice in the straight pipe I had before upgrading to the Banks 4 inch system. Perhaps the 8100 runs a 3 inch back to the Y, but the DMAX definitely runs a 3.5.

I'd have to go with "D", a little louder than stock, but certainly not obnoxious (and yes, I still say that a straight is indeed obnoxious on this truck!). I see that the signature  hyperlinks are not working, so if you'd like to hear an audio file I made of the Banks, go to my picturepage at http://www.picturetrail.com/dmaxdiva (hyperlinks to the sound files may be found under the first truck pic or also in the Banks file), or you can access files directly at http://briefcase.yahoo.com/dmaxdiva. The Banks is most definitely that way to go if you want quicker turbo spool-up, quicker off-the-line throttle response and reduced EGT's as well as a really cool big-block rumble (of course, that little black 90hp Juice box makes a world of difference too!)...
