Steering Column Rattle

Recommended Posts

Found this over the weekend...

Owners of some 1999-2002 Sierra or Silverado 2500HD and 1500HD pickups may comment about a rattle noise from the steering column, particularly during low speed parking lot maneuvers.  A new stub shaft bearing kit 26099860 has been released to address this issue. The kit contains a bearing, a packet of lubricant and instructions.

TIP: The new bearing is a tight hand fit.

TIP: For installation, you must use

essential tool J-45798 to avoid damage to

the bearing seal. This tool has been sent

separately.

TIP: It is not necessary to replace the I-shaft

for this condition.

Although the symptoms are similar, this is not the same condition mentioned in bulletin 00-02-35-003A.

I have my truck in for service as I type...  One of the items on the list was the steering wheel "KlunK" when the wheel was slightly turned and I went over rough or un-even surfaces.  I wonder if they will do the "old" fix of stuffing the grease in there, or if they will replace the bearing like you mentioned.  ???

Mine was in the shop 3 times for this rattle. One fix was to shoot grease down the steering coloum. It didn't work for me though. I just made an appointment to have the new bearing put in.

Well I just had that new bearing kit put in and it worked for about a day and then the rattle returned and I can feel the knocking in the steering wheel again.  I've had it in 3 times for this issue.  I'm calling the layer Monday morning and using the lemon law.
