Maybe it's really a Porsche...

Recommended Posts

Man, did I ever get caught off guard yesterday coming home from work.

I have an 02 Chevy 2500HD CC SB with the 6 liter. I'm one of those people who doesn't drive over 70 MPH (speed limit on most highways in Jersey is 65). On occasion, I'll go 75 or so to pass someone, but then it's back to the middle lane and 70 for me (hey, it's a truck not a Porsche). Well, that all may have changed last night.

The traffic was abnormally light for a commute home. The weather was gorgeous -- warm, dry and clear. I was going with the flow of traffic, windows down, tunes blasting. As I came upon a pack of slower vehicles I proceeded to pass them by switching to the fast lane. The slower group of cars and trucks seemed to be rather large, so I just stayed in the fast lane for a while, going the same rate of speed everyone else was. Since I was going no slower then all the other vehicles in the fast lane I didn't think much about it, until I passed all the slower traffic and started to slide back into the middle lane; I was going 85 MPH! In a truck that weighs more the 3 tons!! And I didn't even realize it!!! Holy sh@t, I never drive that fast, but this truck is soooo smooth that I hadn't even noticed it. I never, ever would have deliberately gone that fast but it was like the truck didn't get fazed. Heck, it seems to bother me more then the truck! Maybe it really is a Porsche after all...

Hehe!!!  I typically run at 99mph on our expressways with mine and the look on peoples faces is priceless as I blow by them.  :D

Oh, ask the poor BMW 3 series a few weeks ago about Vortec power.  :D

Wow, 99 mph (or assume, as close as you can get to the fuel shut-off) with the 8.1L?   :ehh:  Can I get a mileage figure for that?   :D

I assume these trucks have a speed "shutdown" on them?? Dont get yourselves killed out there  ;)

I dont mean to be a smart@$$ here, I am new (although I have lurked now and then) . You guys are obviously a good bit better than me, as I dont have anything close to a heavy duty truck of any make  ??? I drive an 89 S10 4 banger, that I assembled from 3 different trucks. It isnt pretty but it gets me around, and at 17, I cant afford big payments every month  :D  have fun!

Yup, at 100mph it shuts down!  :D  I wouldn't mind hitting it soo much if the power would come back on sooner.  But it doesn't come back on until the vehicle has fallen back to 96 or 95mph.  So if I cruise right up against it at 99, it's the most effective way.

Although admittedly it isn't as bad in this one as it is in my Tahoe.  At 100 in that, it was nearly like throwing you through the windshield.  :D

what do you mean it shuts down at 100? stops runnin or cant go any faster. i've never heard anythiing like that before. is there any way to disable that from happening.

It's a speed limiter.  At 100mph the PCM shuts off the fuel injectors and in some cases retards timing to cut power until the speed picked up by the VSS drops below 100.  In reality it re-enages at around the 95-96 mph mark.

All GM trucks since around 94 have had this.  My 94 Bravada had it, my 95 Blazer had it, the 97 Tahoe has it and now the '02 Silverado has it.

I cruise around 100mph sometimes and it still has plenty of power.  Top speed is close to 120mph using my HPIII and Escalade gauges.   ;)

I catch my self going WAY to fast all the time.  I set the cruise in town.  Even at 30mph. :D   But lookout on the interstate!  (Bastards cruising at 71 in the passing lane :D )

Anyone know how much a ticket would be for 115mph in Texas?  I think anything over 100 gets you a free ticket to jail. :D

Don't ask about the mpg..  :D

My 95 would throw you through the windshield at around 98mph.  This one (used to) seems to just ease off at 100mph.

I should have known... if there's someone who's going to be banging up against the limiter it would be you! :D:(

My 94 S10 had it.  Boy can I vouch for the brick wall effect!  I used to drive 45 miles of back roads each way to work.  I only got pulled one time for 85 mph (on a curve) in 5 years.  I only had the S10 for 2 of those years.

I never saw the speed limiter on the 99 with the rev limiter.

I haven't been close to 100 on the '02 (yet).  I only have 1k miles so far.

OUCH!!! You have no idea what they can do if you get caught going over 100mph. Atemped Manslaughter! No BULL SH!T. Bassically the law says your trying to commit suicide and that is beleive it or not, illegal! My truck cuts off at 97mph, which I am consatantly at, hehe. I want to take the govener off still though. I don't really like to say, but i'm a professional speed (or maybe a chronic speeder?). Between my eyes, gut feeling, and trusty radar detector mounted as high up the winder as possible, I've never gotten a ticket on a highway. In the city is a different story.

Am I correct in thinking this used to be only on vehicles with automatic transmissions? I had a '90 A/T that shut down while another friend had a '95  M/T that didn't.

i love that!  people underestimate trucks way too much.  it's funny to see the look on the face of someone in a benz or bimmer when you speed by them in a truck!
