Hypertech- detonation problems

Recommended Posts

So... i just programmed my truck (2004 GMC Sierra Z-71) with the hypertech power programmer and i noticed a rattling noise while under full throttle acceleration. I read in the manual about "Detonation" and how it can damage the engine. I'm not sure if this noise is "detonation".

I'm wondering what I can do to eliminate this noise if it is caused by detonation.

Could it be that something might be loose under the hood? I have a K & N intake...

plus the rattling noise does not occur when I rev the engine all the way up in park.

I'm currently running 87 octane gas with the 87 octane programming.

Any Ideas?

My friend's truck never made this noise... so i am perplexed.

Thanks

Ryan

Try running 89 octane with the 87 octane tune, that should cure any minor detonation problem. You really should not be having a problem. Perhaps one of the knock sensors is not doing it's job properly.

try the higher octane. Also you could re load the stock program again(if possible). Chances are the tune with the advanced engine timing is looking for more octane. Especially with an older truck with miles because carbon build up can cause this too ,along with the new tune.

I had the same problem with a Hypertech using 87 on the 87 tune. Higher octane gas took care of the problem, although I decided if I had to buy higher octane anyway I might as well put it on the 93 Tune. I did seem to get better gas mileage with the 93 octane, and it had more power so I would suggest trying that for a while and see how you like it.

Yep, run higher octane, s**tty gas is causing your motor to Knock. Handhelds in my opinion suck especially for the money you could buy hptuners and do everything yourself.

Update: I switched to 93 tuning with 93 gas and it eliminated most, if not all of my pinging. only problem now is that when gas went over $3 i had to switch back to 87 tuning with 87 gas. now premium costs over $4.25/gal and i can't afford to run that crap. so oh well.

Hey you might try putting a lil cooler thermostat in it. The older hypertech programs were designed to run a 160 thermostat (thats a lil to cool in my opnion) and 93 gas to control detonation. A 180 with your current setup should work great. I wouldn't go cooler then a 180 though as mileage will suffer.
