2500HD Starting issues

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. New to the forum, but have been lurking for awhile. I just bought a HD Duramax last week and have been having some issues starting it after its already hot, that I was hoping someone had an answer on.

For example, I was driving around on Friday doing errands and when I went to Checker to order a dashmat and was inside for about a half an hour the truck wouldnt start when I came back. I had to leave it be for about another hour and then it fired right up. All three times that it has happened I just leave it alone for an hour or two and when I come back all is well. Now I know this isnt a starter issue since the truck cranks, but just doesnt fire up. Im fairly certain that its not fuel related as it runs just fine when it does start. What else is there on a Diesel?

Reeeeally? Would it still run normally when it did fire up?

I am still on my first tank after the dealership filled it for me, so I didnt see what got put in. Also, do you think that would cause long term damage?

i wouldnt be surprised if they put gas in first.. i had a ford like that . the smart guy at the dealer put gas then figured it out and top it off with diesel.. anyway had ####... there are some real smart people at some dealerships...

Well from what I was told it seems that a part of the GM alarm system was to blame. ??? Whether or not that is BS, I dont know. Hopefully that will take care of things though. I should be able to pick up the truck today or tomorrow and find out for myself.

As for the lot boys..... Irregardless of them putting gas or diesel in the truck, when the took it to be detailed, they ran it into something. I have paint work scheduled for the 16th.

Off to a great start so far with this truck.   It can only get better from here.

Man Im telling you, I dont know what needs to be replaced, but it damn sure better be done this time. I just checked AZ lemon laws and it looks like I have to have 4 repair attempts on it before I can call it quits. So I have to endure this crap one more time after this if I am going to use that law.

In other news, they fixed the lot damage..... Kind of. The original damage to the fender flare looks ok now, but it looks like a blind man removed it and put it back on the truck. Nice work around all the bolt holes.

I am just about niced out. The service advisor has been great, though her partner there has been a real dick. So Id really hate to go scream at her, but jesus Im getting put into a grand prix or something while my $43000 truck gets hosed around with by the mechanic monkeys. They also left taco sause on the console when I picked it up the time before last. Im so pissed Im not ever sure Im making sense anymore. So if this rant is too inane, sorry about that.

I have a 2001 1500HD Crew Cab with the 6.0L.  Had a similar problem.  I saw your post and took it with me when I went to the dealer to show them.

Truck always ran and started fine until I went over 100 miles straight.  After 100 Miles, if I shut the truck off, I could not start it.  Engine would just crank and crank.  Didn't sound like it had any spark or fuel.  I waited about 10 minutes, then disgustedly, I tried to start it and low and behold, it fired right up and ran fine.  Managed to duplicate it several times on long trips.  If I drove 200+ miles straight, I had to wait 20-30 minutes before truck would start again.

1st trip to a dealer while travelling in Georgia revealed they had no idea what it was.  They said maybe a fuel filter so replaced it.  Got home to Virginia Beach and headed straight to the dealer.  They were good enough to loan me a car and keep the truck.  100 mile round trip by their service rep and he shut the engine off and THANK GOD, it wouldn't start.  It also saved several codes:

1.  Loss of Communications - U1041

2.  Loss of Communications - U1026

3.  Crank Sensor Code - P0335

Tech assist was called and they explained all cases for this code required new crank shaft sensor.   Sensor was replaced under warranty and no problems yet.  Drove 105 miles, shut the truck off and started right back up.

Service guys said the Crank Sensor monitors crank shaft and shuts down all engine functions if an imbalance is detected, or if the crank stops moving.  Supposed to save the engine in the case of a catostrophic failure.  They also said they have heard of the sensors getting lose and shutting vehicles down while driving.

Don't know if this might have been the problem, but it seems to have fixed mine.

I'm thining your fuel could be FUBAR and the computer is seeing water or something in it....I honestly don't know....I do know that is a big problem and that I would take that truck and tell them to either fix it and warrenty it, or give me a new truck...that's BS out of a new truck...

Just my $0.02
