Bought new exhaust, too loud! need help

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I appreciate any opinions on this matter. I taked to a guy that owns a muffler shop a few weeks ago about an exhaust. I had actually decided not to get it then my wife suprised me with it. Problem is it's too loud especially at highway speeds. I have an 07 crew cab and it is simply a muffler replacement. It is a melatonin muffler. I think it is supposed to be a gibson knock-off or something like that. It is a seamless-oval shaped muffler. It sounds good but is just too loud. He also welded on a stainless tip that looks great. All the factory pipes were left intact otherwise. Any opinions on mufflers that are quiter inside the cab? This one was only $150 installed so I understand it may require a pricer one but this thing has to go.

i ran into the same problem w/ a muffler swap.. it was on a 03 silverado ss.. i just replaced the factory muff w/ a magnaflow and it "drowned" like crap.. i just went back like a week later and put 3 inch turndowns right past the muffler.... got compliments all the time..... just to give you some cost saving tips, cut the factory exhaust off 2-3 inches past the muffler and throw it away, then you just go in and get your turndowns...... :banghead:

Not sure what length your muffler is, but a longer magnaflow muffler sounds like what you need. Maybe something 18" or longer.

Thanks for the replies. I noticed the muffler is much shorter than stock with no turndowns. He just welded on a chrome tip. Do you think a longer magnaflow with turndowns would be quiet enough or would it make sense to order a gibson exhaust. They claim to be very quiet in the cab. ANy info is appreciated. Thanks guys.

I'm not a fan of gibson, But I did buy a 30 series flowmaster, The old single chamber race muffler, not the new one there making now. Its very short but very oval as well, it has one chamber and I got it at a local performance shop 'lopers' for 50 bucks single in dual out right before the rear tire sounds and looks great! If you can find that muffler I highly recomend it.

I've heard that Gibson isn't much louder than stock. Not sure if that's what you want, but I like to hear some feedback from my exhaust. Turndowns right after the muffler is going to be noisy inside the cab. Longer tailpipes will reduce in-cab noise.

not to start a "inter-fight", but you could not be more wrong.... there is a ton of room for the exhaust to exit under the truck..... now on a mustang or a camaro turn downs would be loud because you dont have adequate space for the vibrations to exit thus giving the dreeded droan.......

Ummm...OK.

Turndowns right after the muffler is going to be louder in-cab vs. exiting further to the rear on any vehicle.

I've got magnaflow with turndowns right after the muffler. it sounds great for me. It's not too loud.. and not loud at all at idle rpm. If you wanted, you could run pipes from a magnaflow muffler (1in 2 out) out the back or get 45's... regardless of the angle, you'll get a quieter sound with the full length pipes out the back than you will with turndowns. I got my turndowns, muffler, labor and tax all for $150 out the door. it'd probably be more $$$ to get full pipes but i bet you'd be more satisfied sound-wise.

w/ our combined posts totalling a whopping 20, im sure our knowledge to some is non-exsistent...this i know from experience. he WILL get more in-cab noise running through the stock pipes vs dumping, period.... :)

So you're saying that if I take my Corsa and dump it right after the cab, I'll actually get less in-cab noise than with my tailpipes exiting at the rear? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

listen, yhis was the case w/ my previous truck...a silverado ss. i replaced the stock muffler w/ a magnaflow WHILE retaining the stock piping... this whole post revolves around keeping the STOCK pipe..... while doing this i (HOLSTEIN) recieved alot of resonance in the cab... i then found some whom had the same issues on the sss web site that resorted to turndowns to fix the problem..... HALEN, have ever had dumps? clm7214, have you?

semper fi,
