Engine Block Heater

Recommended Posts

Can someone advise on the correct location of the engine block heater on the 6.6 Duramax?

I did take a look at the owners manual, but the given location is vague and after attempting to locate the electrical plug could not find it.

In my manual it says it is located near the power steering reserver but that is about it and shows something in a diagram that looks like a coiled extension plug.

So far no luck in finding it.

The easiest way to find it is to pull back the rubber splash shield in the passenger side wheelwell.  You will see the cord cable tied to the frame.

You can route it out between the bumper and grille on the passengers side with a little manipulation... no need to remove anything but the cable ties.

A word of caution about mounting between the grill and bumber. Don't back away with it plugged in  !! It will modify your grill in a way that isn't pleasing to the eye. Another method is to mount an electrical 4 plug box somewhere under the hood. Run a single wire from there down around the tow hook. This allows you to plug oil pan, trans pan, and battery heaters to the box. It may be overkill for your temps but that's what's done in AK. see alot of modified grills in the winter here :baa: .

I checked out the reported location for the Coolant Heater on the Duramax, but it was a no go. It is not on the right hand fram rail, at least under the splash shield.

Any other ideas. This is the 2001 Regular Cab. Could it have been tucked up somewhere else on the front end?

Passenger side, in the engine compartment. Mine was hard to find also. It's wrapped pretty good with tape and may look like a harness. Look around, you'll find it. if it's there!
