More Power

Recommended Posts

I have a 2002 GMC 2500HD extended cab, short bed, 6.0 engine with 4.10 gears. I pull a 30 foot fifth wheel which weighs approx. 8700 lbs when fully loaded. I am installing a K&N filter in hopes to get a bit more power. I have called Banks Power System and they do not have an application form my truck, but are working on it. Any ideas how to get a little more power? The truck pulls well on flat ground and mild grades, but on steep grades pull at about 33 mph, 2800 rpm at about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle in second gear. On the average, getting around 9 mpg when towing.

Thanks

You could get a little more power with a HyperTech Programmer, but i dont remember if its out for your truck yet.

I know it is available for th 2001 6.0L so I'm guessing it is the same unit for the '02s.

Hypertech claims over 40HP for the 6.0L but I'm skeptical about those numbers.

A supercharger would be the way to go, but it is expensive.  I would think you would gain 100HP and 100 ft lbs of torque at the rear wheels.

I've used Hypertech programmars on a '95 Tahoe and '99 Z71  ... worked as advertised on both, can recommend them as putting out a good product...currently running an Edge Juice Module on an '02 Duramax, the results are unbelievable

I gained a lot of power with my few bolt ons.. About 40 RWHP and droped over a full second off my track ET.. NOt to say that you want to race but put the numbers in to show power increase on a 6200lb 4x4 crew cab.. Here are some of my recent dyno numbers below.. I don`t recomendthe cam I installed, it was only worth about 5 rwhp and actually lost power over most of the curve.. Still testingand looking for another one though..Exhaust work helps but is expensive per HP gain..Be carefull in that area.. My best mods have been the Hpp3, UPD induction and UD pulley..hope this helps..

Here is my dyno link:

Uncorking the engine will net you gains.  Replace the restrictive intake and the restrictive exhaust will net you the most increases before getting into expensive superchargers/turbochargers or going into the engine.

Hypertech puts out a decent product but personally from seeing many cars on the dyno, their stuff is better suited for altering gear ratios, tires sizes, etc, that isn't part of the "power programming" feature.  For PCM work, you're better off sending it to someone like Jason at MTI, Steve Cole at TTS or some other tuners.  Stay away from Ed Wrong though, he couldn't tune a go kart if it had an LS1 or LS1 derived Vortec engine.

Then we can start getting into the fun stuff.
