HD2500 transfer case fluid

Recommended Posts

ok i towed the trailer this w/e and i was really impressed how well it pulled..very happy with it..now for the question,i noticed a smell of gear oil,not burnt gear oil but fresh gear oil..i know if you stop and get out and smell burnt gear oil its usually the beginning of something possibly bad about to happen..anyway going 70-75 with no problems and about halfway home i smelt the oil,of course first thinking its the guy in front of me but noticing that truck was no longer there for the last 10 miles i figured it was from my truck but how could i be smelling the gear oil form the rear axle ?? anyway i asked the mechanic at the garage today and he recalled a vehicle(hd1500) came in for a noise..upon inspection they found the transfer case filled with gear oil and not dextron tranny fluid..he also said as far as he remembered from talking to a dealer that there were  some trucks that got the wrong fluid in the transfer case..ok question is what belongs in there ?? manual says something like auto trak fluid ?? can anyone tell me if they have had this problem and was the transfer case fluid that was wrong be differential gear oil ?? thanks in advance

im going to get a look at it tonite when i go to the garage but thought id ask

almost forgot,the truck is an 01 hd2500/c.c./4x4 with the 6.0 4spd.auto

425-

Dexron III belongs in that transfer case

Only the half tons with autotrack get the special fluid (I think it is blue colored??).

My transfer case took about 2 qts when I changed the fluid in my truck.

i checked it last nite and sure enough it is dextron tranny looking fluid..no idea where the smell was coming from but im pretty sure it was from my truck..no sense in bringing it in and having them tell me "no problems found"..guess ill be keeping an eye on it next trailering trip..

DexronIII.  Of course if you have the Allison, they could've always put the Castrol Transynd (which is a Dexron III) into the transfer case like they do with the transmission.

A regular 80/90 gear oil would be WAYYY to thick and heavy for use in a transfer case.

Transynd as a factory fill on the Allison?

I don't think so......
