(2002 style) factory rooftop clearance lamps

Recommended Posts

Has anyone installed these on their rig?

I bought 5 of the smaller lamps and plan to install them on my rooftop in the conventional pattern.  I have an idea how the new-style screw-mount attaches to the roof top, but I want to verify it.  Has anyone already installed these themselves?

Here's the way I see it.  It looks to me like I need to drill a 1/4-inch hole for each side of the lamp.  The bottom of the square metal clip is inserted into that hole.  When the mounting screw is tightened down, it causes the clip to expand outward to grasp the edges of the hole.

Can anyone tell me if that's correct, or is it done some other way?

When I installed them on my truck I just drilled pilot holes for the screws themselves and ditched the metal clips. I still used the square plastic part to fill between the lens and the sheetmetal but removed the metal portion. I think the factory uses punched square holes that work with the clips in the manner you described. However, the big holes that requires probably contributes to the reported water leakage problems with the lights. I just used a little silicone where the screw heads contact the lens and where the screw enters the sheet metal and have had zero problems and it looks factory.

Thanks.  That's exactly what I ended up doing.  It worked fine -- no leaks.  The 5-lamp setup looks factory since the lamps themselves are factory for this model year.  I think they look really good on my truck.  I had them wired to the park lamps so they come on automatically with the auto-headlights.  They also flash with the park lamps when unlocking the truck with the remote transmitter.  I'll take a couple of pics this weekend and post them in this thread.

I'm planning on putting in the clearance lights also, but, how do you get the headliner down.  And I have the overhead console.  Is this going to be difficult to take off and put back on!  Also, did you use a factory wire harness for the lights?

Where did you get your lights and how much did you pay for them. GM Parts Direct has them, but, they are overcharging on shipping..way over!

Thanks for any help

:D

SierraHDCC- what did you use for a harness? I installed the factory 'cyclops' style and used the factory harness. The P/N's are: 15366160 Harness list$30.96, 15059751 center lamp list$60.50, and 15059752 side lamps list$60.50ea.  I really like the look of the single center lamp and that's why I installed the set on my truck. I got a 25% discount through my work so the total was $160 at my local dealer. These lamps are mfg. by Blazer, the same as the '98 and older, so I would imagine they will be out in aftermarket sooner or later. The pricing is interesting; the factory option is $55 for the set (order it if you want it :D), and the large center lamp is the same price as the small single side lamps at the dealer....The headliner is not a big deal, just drop (unscrew) the sunvisors and remove the screw at the front of the console. You may want to remove the moldings around the seat belt mounts, then it will drop down enough to give you room to work.

I took a couple of pictures this weekend with the lamps installed.  Click on the word "Pictures" under my signature.  Go to the 2001 GMC folder.  The pictures are at the bottom of the stack.  Sorry for the quality of the photos -- it was late in the day and the lighting wasn't very good.

As far as installation:  I wasn't sure how to pull the headliner down myself and get it back up without damage, so I had a local  upholstery shop that specializes in automotive work (headliners, etc.) do it for me.  I talked my local dealer down to the price of $42.50 each for the lamps plus $12 each for the wiring "pigtail".  Outrageously expensive, I know, but this is the look I wanted.  I got up on a ladder, measured carefully, and marked the drill locations where I wanted the lamps mounted then took it to the local shop.  He used the pigtails (which plug into the lamps and provide a short length of wiring) and made a harness.

I really like the way it came out and I've gotten several compliments already.
