Changed the cam in my 2001 6.0 litre

Recommended Posts

Waited a long time to find out the exact stock cam specs of the 2001/2002 6.0 litre but never new for sure. Information gathered from Full Floater, Neil 6.0 and Oxidizer,,,,I decided that the specs were likely to be .197/.208 , .500/.500 on a .115 LSA. Bsed on these specs I did not want to put the Zo6 /Ls6 cam into this 364 CID motor. I feel it would have been a waste of time and money on a 6100 lb truck. No offense but that is my personal opinion on the ls6 cam.. In other words just wouldn`t feel any power gains. It takes a lot of power to feel the change on a 6000 lb truck VS a 3500 F body car.

The main reason I did the cam was because I got it for FREE from an F body friend of mine. The specs were close to what I wanted,, even though not excat. I did have to buy springs and I bought the best LS1 springs available in my opinion. They are the comp cam 26918 springs rated at #130 lb..a little much for this cam but room to grow on if I change cams again..hehe  The Free cam I put in was a Crane cam .210/.216 with .534 intake lift and .554 exhaust lift on a .113 LSA. This cam has a nice increase of intake duration (6 deg.) and .9 more lift. over the ZO6 cam. The really nice thing is that it has a lot tighter lobe seperation thatn the Zo6 , which helps keep the peak power down in the mid range.

So far the results are good.. NO missfire codes or ECM problems at all. Idle is great , with only a very, very , very slight bump, bump.. I mean very slight. I could drive this truck in to the dealer and they would never know..The exhaust also has a slight , slight bump to it mud really un-noticable. This cam is a lot tamer than I thought it would be. I knew it would be tame but idle is a lot better than expected.

Ok, no dynos yet but will in a few weeks or so. I reced another 5.3 litre that I always test race against and Low end torque feels unchanged but with this 92 deg heat, high hum. and low barometer we have now ,,, it makes it hard to judge. I can feel a good mid range to upper rpm increase with what seems no low end power loss or gain..Still need to do some more playing around. The 5.3 I raced, I used to only pull it 1-2 lenghts from a 40 mph roll up to 95 but now its more like 6 plus. Again, I need to dyno to know for sure but thats my Buttometer test so far. lol!

Good news on MPG. I drove to the beach and pack at 70 to 75 MPH average and had some in town and beach driving.I also, passed a lot of people at WOT throttle checking power but still logged my best MPG ever. I have never Broke the 13 mpg range in this truck yet.. I have 29,500 miles and got 13.082 MPG!! LMAO! NOw to check in town driving and see If I can at least get the 10-11 mpg I usually see. Not expecting better MPG but if it at least stays unchanged then I will be very happy.
