11700 lbs.

Recommended Posts

I over exceeded the manufactures recomendations today for the 6.0L when I towed my friends "contractor trailer" about 10 miles for him.  GM says 10000 lbs is the limit for my truck to tow.  My hitch is rated at 12000 lbs with torsion bars.  His trailer is not equipped for bars so I exceeded that rating too.

This is not the smartest thing to do and I don't recommend it to anyone.  However the truck handled the load fine (even the heavy tounge weight).

Once the load was moving it actually towed great!!!  And the highest temp I saw on the tranny gauge was 160 degrees.

Even with the 1300 lb tounge weight the truck sat basically level.

These trucks are pretty solid, and my friends was extremely impressed as to how tight and quiet it was.  He thought my truck towed and handled the load as good as his older 454 flat bed 3500!!!

ummm...power still goes through your transfer case in 2wd, just not towards the front... :D

Anyways, glad to hear that your truck held up well!

Good point, but it was the 4wd engagement that I had problems with...

What's the transfer case have to do with anything?  The HDs with the 8.1 are rated to pull 16,000 with the same t-case and rear ends - only difference is the motor and transmission.  The 6.0 should pull what the 8.1 is rated to pull just as safely due to having the same brakes, hitches, etc.  The only difference is it might take you longer to get where your going.

AgTeacher,

There is no doubt that the chassis in the truck was up to the task.  It carried the load well and was very much under control.

Actually the big block and Dmax are rated to tow 12000 lbs off of the ball and the 6.0L is rated at 10200.  These are GM ratings and they are the same for the 6.0L towing a fifth wheel, while the other two motors with the Allison can hook onto a 5'er weighing over 15000 lbs.  I'm figuring the restriction must be the 6.0L power or the 4L80E tranny (most likely the 6.0L).  The reason the ball towing is 12000 lbs is because of the limitations of the classV hitch.

As far as the T-case, the power passes through it on the way to the rear-end...  but 11700 lbs shouldn't phase it...

Oh yeah, I know, I was just ribbin' Shaners.  That transfer case should have no problems at all pulling that much weight.  In fact, I pulled about 10,000lbs for about 60 miles the other day with my 1/2 ton.  (It was a friends broke down Super Duty Powerstroke...I'll have to tell y'all about that story sometime!).

I have pulled and loaded my truck more than anyone I know.  I pull a trailer damn near everyday to a jobsite and across rough terrain and overloaded damn near everytime.  I usually pull about 10,000lbs. for an average load.  I've pulled on hills, dirt, long distances this weight the so called weight max of the truck and the truck doesn't even complain about the load.  Maybe because the truck has a 5spd tranny but the truck pulls great.  I absolutely love this truck it is the best I thought I couldn't top my old 95 3500 350, 5spd, 4.10.  Well this truck does top it.  The most I have ever pulled with the truck is 13,000 on Gooseneck(including gooseneck weight) and the truck did fine.  I don't see the weak component of the truck.  It is just great truck..
