500 mile Breakin

Recommended Posts

Hello From the Bayou State:

Just bought a new GMC 2500HD SLE Crew cab, 6.0, 4.10 Locker, 4speed automatic.

This is the first brand new off the lot truck I've owned lately. I think the last one was an 1986 Jeep Commance Pick-up 2.8 GM v6 with 5speed 4.10's

There have been some new to me trucks along the way (84 4runner 22R 4.10's, 92 Chevy 3/4ton 350/4.10's, 97 Ford 150 4.2) All of these truck's had over 150,000 miles on them before we parted way's.

My question is how did you breakin your new HD.

I don't know if I can wait the 500 miles before dropping a trailer on the ball to see this mule pull.    :D

P.S. I almost forgot all the other trucks had manual trans. This one will be the first juicer I've owned. Is there anything I should be looking out for. Thanks

The first 500 miles will help loosen up the motor/tranny etc...  Most importantly it will seat the brakes.

I wouldn't push it too hard, but go ahead and drive it like you have too.

Personally, I think the reason that they tell you not to tow and not to exceed 55 mph (That's ridiculus), is because of the brakes issue.   The rotors are extremely smooth and could possible have some light oils on them which may get soaked up by the pads causing longer stopping distances.

I put 1000 miles on mine before I towed, but that is because my trailer is 4 tons +.  I tow using tow/haul, but once again that is because of the weight.  I wouldn't be afraid of hauling something smaller after you have a few hundred miles on it.  Enjoy your new truck.
