Looking at a Buying Headers

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at putting some headers on my '98 Z71 1/2 ton, 5.7L 4WD. Does anybody have a success, or "don't go this route" story to share? I'd like it to be as painless as possible (who wouldn't?!) and not have to re-route sensors or cut anywhere. I've read a lot of posts on headers and most seem to suggest long tubes rather than shorty's and using factory GM gaskets instead of what's included.

I'm more handy than your average shade tree mech but I don't work on autos for a living either. I instead try to keep airplanes from falling out of the air for the Air Force.

Also, has anyone gone from stock exhuast conifg from the cat back and used a two-in and two-out shared chamber muffler instead of an "H" or "X" pipe? Basically I'm wondering if the muffler will act as a H or X or if I should put one in any way...

After doing a lot of research I found only one set of non-short tubes. I am in the process of installing a 383 and needed to install a set of headers, complete custom dual exhaust system with a x-over. The tubes are a tri-y design from thorley I was only able to find them at Summit Racing. I have not received them as of yet, but they are on the way. Here is the part number if you are interested (DTE-302Y-FED-C).

Cool, let me know how they work out for you. Especially fit and finish and ease of installation. I imagine they'll be a little easier to do on a 2WD...

New headers showed up today, NICE!!!!!! They are shiny and coated in ceremic, all of the bungs are already in place and a complete set of gaskets and bolts came with them. I do not know how hard they will be to install as the engine guy is doing the complete install and break in on the motor. But I will ask him when he is done and let you know. :loser:

So have you got these put on yet? If so, how bad was it to do the job and how much of a difference has it made?

I have not installed them yet, And as for the difference in feel, I will not be able to tell you since they will be installed with the new motor (305 out and 383 in), and I think the motor will make a hugh difference itself. So far the finish is great, I have heard good things about the thorleys so as soon as my motor guy has finished final assembly, I will report back what they tell me about the installation.
