Exhaust Options

i have a magnaflow.....dual 3's in with 2.5's out at 45 degrees behind the tires on a 6.0 crew....Not too loud, not too soft.  Pretty burly sounding....but i don't like the airy sound at idle....I'm getting ready to swap out for dual series 50 flowmasters.

I have a custom Magnaflow setup that I had done at FLP exhaust.

I cut the stock muffler off and becuase the outlet on the passenger side is slightly staggered up I couldn't replace it with one muffler.  I had to get two Magnaflow's stacked on end and then had two tailpipes come out behind each tire.

The mufflers were expensive because they are polished SS and they are about 28" long (as close as the stock size as possible).

But it sounds loud under midthrottle applications, at WOT throttle it actually isn't that bad.  I still have yet to get WAV files yet.

I had a Magnaflow (dual in and dual out) installed back in April 2002. Had problems w cab resonance between 1600 and 1800 rpm.. may have been compounded by crew cab? Anyway, I had the cab double dynamatted and installed a Pace Edwards Bedlocker tonneau cover thinking that would solve my problem - didn't. Went back to exhaust shop, they installed two 12 inch resonators (glass packs) behind the muffler which toned it down a bit.

I had called Magnaflow and was told that they were not recommending any of their mufflers be used on the big blocks. They were designing a muffler specifically for the 8.1 - it may be out by now. I am happy w Magnaflow but would spend more time making sure I got the right muffler for my truck instead of relying on the exhaust shop.

Here's a pic of what I did.

After I split them and made it a "true dual" setup

Originally how I had it using the stock tailpipe with bigger tip than I really wanted.

As to resonance, yes, I get A LOT.  Enough to where it vibrates the floor under my feet. :D  But that's the way I like it.  Personally I don't think it's loud enough!  I want it even louder!

I like things loud and this BBC is toooo quiet!  I may be doing it from mufflers forward next to help open it up a little.  Yes...I know I'm crazy!   :thumb:

CMNTMXR81, if you like it loud you would have loved my old truck.  '78 4X4 with a 450hp 454 4spd.  Camaro headers that held tight to the floor then an absolutely straight shot to the rear axle.  2 1/2" stainless that was too hard to bend.  To go up and over I cut 22 1/2 degree angles, reversed the cuts and welded to make 45's.  No cats in those days and the mufflers were Walker Turbo Tubes which were built like glasspacks without the glass.  Actually I could drive around town without being too loud.  The 2 1/2" pipes helped deepen the tone but when you got on it HOLY COW!!!!!!!!!!!!  I still have the motor under my bench but wish the truck hadn't dissintegrated in the WI/MN winters!

I've got this setup on my truck (GMC Denali 6.0L).

http://www.magnaflow.com/05magazine/05truckinb.htm

The actual muffler that comes with the package is much longer and polished ss. It has 2 -3" in and 1-4" out.

Install on my truck wasn't perfect as it's designed for the 2500.  I had to move two hangers.  Everything else went in with plenty of clearance.

There is some resonance in the cab around 2000 RPM, but at WOT you would swear there was a 'vette coming up beside you!  It get's quiet at higher RPMs with little or no resonance.  Idle is failry quiet.

I'm not sure about the numbers they claim in that article, but my seat of the pants meter has registered at least some increase in power.  I got it spinning in the rain the other day which is hard to do with AWD and 17"s.
