2002 1500HD Crew Cab 4x4

Recommended Posts

Thinking about buying a new HD crew cab 4x4 with the 6.0 liter motor and 3.73? standard rear end gear. Does anyone have the gas mileage info? I hardly ever pull a trailer so I am talking driving empty. I have it down to the Chevy and the Ford supercrew 4x4. I prefer the Chevy but am worried about the gas mileage.

a little offtopic but the new truck trend has a good article about the 1500HD CC vs the supercrew

Gas milage on either will not be great.  My 1500 Z71 gets 13 city and 17 highway

if your worried about gas milage you probably dont want a truck at all

I am looking for an improvement on the 14 mpg I get in my 98 Expedition 5.4L 4x4. I am reasonably sure the Supercrew with the 4.6L and 4 wheel drive will get better mileage. But I think I like the Chevy. Time to trade the Expedition, and definitely for a 4 door truck.

The only gear available for the 6.0L is the 4.10.  I get about 12-13 mpg's on my truck and I very rarely leave town...  2 mile commute to work!!!

The truck has tons of power though and I love all the room.  The 1500HD may get slightly better milage due to it sitting lower and less wind resistance.  To put it into respective, I'm about 1.5-2 mpg's less than what I got with similar driving in my 1500 silverado '00 5.3L 4x4 excab, but I'm pushing alot more weight too..

Thats true for the 2500HD, but 3.73 gears are standard on the 1500HD.  If it was me, I would go for the 4.10's anyways.  These new generation Vortec motors tend to like the lower gearing, and it doesn't effect the mileage much, if at all.  And if you plan on getting larger tires (you probably won't like those puny little 245's), the 4.10's are the only way to go.

Thanks for the info. Kelley Blue Book shows the 3.73 gear as standard with the 4.10 a $50.00 option. I'll go with limited slip in whatever I buy. Guess that will probably drag down mileage a little. Anyone have any thoughts on how much mileage 4 wheel drive costs? I will have it, but I am just curious.

The "KansasKid" shoots and scores again!!!   LOL  Eveything you said is correct Kyle...  The 245 tires are a bummer and 4.10's will help if you increase tire size.

4wd will decrease your mpg's a little, but todays trucks are soo much better that it is marginal.  Just rember that you'll be moving 2 1/2 tons down the road and the stop and go stuff will kill the mpg's.

4wd will increase the resale and sellabillity (is that a word?) of your truck when you get rid of it...

Shoot, for fifty bucks its a no-brainer to go with the 4.10s, actually I'm a bit surprised its costing you anything.  On the trucks we've bought it was N/C either way you went, guess that has changed with the new generation.  Your truck will love you when you tow.  With the overdrives that todays trucks have you will have a very minimal difference between the two mileage wise, but performance wise a large gap will show up.  While I have no experience with a 1500HD, in fact I have yet to see one in IL, I would guess you will be in the 13-14 overall mileage range, +/- a little depending on several factors.  I would think the difference between it and the Supercrew would be negligable, but since you plan to tow some, the 1500HD is more suited for that use.

My truck has the same engine and gear ratio, is 4x4, and I have been averaging 12.4 in the city and 16.7 on the highway.  Yes, I check my mileage with every tank and take an average, and it's getting better little by little.  I have 10,600 miles on it.

I found the truck I'm gonna buy. 2002 Chevy Avalanche 4wd with Z71 package. Drove one today on a whim, and WOW!! This is what I've been looking for. Stable, fast, and lots of room. I didn't even notice the sunroof until my wife saw a handle on the headliner and said, what's this? They come with the 5.3L and I know it's a good motor. I have had good service and mpg(20) from it in my company truck. The only thing between me and this truck now is if they will give me 22,000 for my Expedition. Anybody had any experience with this truck? I'm sure I'm in the wrong forum now but since I am new just direct me to the correct one.
