used truck for towing questions

Recommended Posts

my dad is looking to get a 1 ton crewcab truck. and he cant decide on what he wants more.. a 454 or a diesel. the truck is mainly going to be used into towing his 24ft 5th wheel. and maybe someday the skid-steer loader. so i thought i'd get some imput on them... i'm thinking a diesel would be better for just towing since he'll probably keep his 95 z71.  also looking between 95-96 for the truck. (hes picky)  so maybe someone has an idea on which way to go.

The 6.5L diesel in those trucks is a reliable diesel.  It would do a good job towing that "smallish" fifth wheel and would also do a fine job with any of your towing needs.

The 454 is also a strong towing motor and I wouldn't be afraid of one with 50-60K on it.

The problem would being able to find a diesel without at least 100K on the odometer.  You'd also pay more $$ for it.

If he is not in a hurry, then keep your eyes open for the diesel, and if you happen to find an exceptional 454 then don't be afraid to buy it.

I would personally get the 6.5TD for that truck.  I know they are reliable and will pull a good load without breaking down.  Now don't go and compare them to a DMAX or a PSD, but they are a good pulling motor.  The 454's are a good pulling motor my friend who races pulls a 48' Gooseneck with a 225" rail-car in it the weight loaded with quads, tools, propane, alcohol, etc.... is about 14,500lbs and it does great...but I've heard of the 454 having oiling problems so...Do what makes  you happy..

Between the 95 and 96 model years,,,,  Definitely go with the 96 if going the 454 route.  A 96 454 will blow away a 95 454.

I have a 97 Crew cab dually 4x4, 454 auto.  Truck weighs 7200lbs, trailer weighs 7000lbs, and pullin truck weighs 6200 to 6500lbs.  So you can see I gross some weight.  Have pulled 2 trucks before on my trailer  :but:
