4x4 question

Recommended Posts

I have a 98 Z71 5.7L 160k miles, I've had it for about 8 months, and haven't done any off-roading since then. Well yesterday I engaged 4H to keep the transfer case lubed up (noob to 4x4 please bare with me). I just kept it in engaged for my drive home which is about 2-3miles @ 50mph. My question is, What should I notice when driving on the road at that speed? any noises? because I did hear a type of winding noise, no grinding of any sort, is this normal?

Oh and it has the floor manual shifter for 4x4.

Thanks for the help

When 4x4 is engaged you will hear slightly more noise than without. I guess it could be considered a type of winding noise or perhaps a hum of sorts. Its hard to describe. I feel slightly more vibration from the front end when its engaged. You should also notice that the wheel is hard to turn on dry pavement with it engaged. If you turn too hard you may even feel it jump a little and if done too much, you can actually damage the drivetrain.
