2500HD GVW

My friend just pulled in with his brand new 2002 Dodge laramie SLT Plus 3/4 ton diesel excab 8' bed with the 6 speed and I opened the drivers door and saw it was 8800 GVW.  My HD is 9200!!!, and his truck is 10 inches longer than mine, and the diesel has to take away some because of it's weight!!!

I was really surprised to see that my truck had a heavier GVW than his...

His truck is sweet though...  Autumn wood over silver and graphite leather...  I bet it is a pulling SOB with the 6-speed.   He pulled my trailer one time for me with his '96 5-speed Cummins and I was very impressed.  But those Cummins are very noisy!!!

I love that Cummins motor, but just not the truck around it.

Those Dodge's aren't that great for pulling large gooseneck trailers either, they have problems with the frame cracking right behind the cab.  I have a friend who is a real Mopar buff and yesterday he admitted to me that he was beat.  He and his dad went to price a new aluminum stock trailer.  They asked what  a 32' would cost, but when the dealer found out they planned to get a Dodge to pull it he wouldn't price anything longer than a 26'.

I sure like that Cummins motor though.  Get an Allison behind that thing and you have one sweet drivetrain.

Yep, the Dodge 2500 is comparable in GVWR to the 2500 Silverado.  The Dodge 2500 is available with a much stouter drivetrain then the 2500 Silverado though.  Its comparable to your 2500HD in this area.

And you are correct, the HO Cummins combined with a 6-speed is a very stout setup for pulling.  They must have done some work on sound deadening in the newer trucks, because the one I drove wasn't very loud inside.  Sure wouldn't want to slap an auto behind a diesel if I wanted to pull with it though....

The only problem with a Cummins powered dodge is the Dodge bolted to the Cummins motor.  With that out of the way yes the HD has a higher GVWR higher than that of dodge.  Just for future information if you overload a dodge enough the spring perches on the frame will actually rip off the frame.  You got to love that! :sigh:  :)  :D  :P  :D

On the truck badge the '2500' of the '2500HD' is a bit misleading.

2500 suggests a 3/4 ton truck. If you guys take a looky, you'll notice your 2500HD is sitting atop the dually chassis.

9200 has been the benchmark GVW for 1 ton SRW trucks for some years. That's what you got boys, a 1 ton SRW truck.

Same as the Ford SD F350 SRW except Ford upped the GVW to 9700 and they have an option to push it to 9900.

This summer, Dodge will introduce the 2500/3500 Heavy Duty series. For the first time a 3500 SRW will be available with a 305hp cummins HO

There is a truck war on....

The problem with high GVW single rear wheel trucks is the tires can't handle the load. That's one of the reasons GM decide to make the 3500 only available as a dually.

Think about it, 9900 lbs. GVW distributed over 12,000 lbs worth of tire capability. Evenly distributed should not be a problem but where does most of your load go? In the bed. Where is the trailer? In the back. Where is the gooseneck hitch? Over the rear wheels.

It's simply a numbers war. It was interesting how when GM came out with higher GVW numbers than the Ford, they (Ford) instantly revised their numbers upwards. Same truck.

With all that said, a 2500HD has a gooseneck trailer capacity of 15,700 lbs. with a GCVW of 22,000 in a SRW truck.
