Slipping rear on HD

Recommended Posts

This is weird!  When I'm at a complete stop, then take off, it feels like my rear wheels are slipping on ice.  Unfortunately that's not the case though considering it's about 50 degrees outside and the pavement is dry!!  What's going on with my rig?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

There was talk on this some time back.  Possible causes were a bad two piece driveshaft that GM put out a TSB to fix on certain configurations.  The other possible problem would be that you need new rear end fluid.

Here is the thread that I found that dealt with this.

Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Some people describe this as an "intermittent neutral" problem.  I personally think it is in the tranny itself.

Is this what you are describing?  You step on the gas and the engine revs, and then "bang" it's in gear and you lurch forward?

There are alot of people here who have felt this...  I felt it 3-4 times in my '00 1/2 ton in 4400 miles, and once in my HD in 2700 miles.  I'm going to ask the dealer when I take the truck in for it's 3000 mile service in a few weeks....

I was gonna say, this sounds more like a transmission issue.  If it were coming from the rear end, you'd hear a "clunking" or ratcheting noise.

Sounds almost as if it's in the torque converter.  I'd look at the TCC lockup speed if you have access to such data.  Either that or insufficient line pressure is available off idle to re-engage it.

It's exactly like "Shaners" put it; I step on the gas and the engine revs...and then BAM!  It kicks it gear and I'm off!  I doubt it has to do with changing my rear diff fluid, more along the lines of the tranny.  I'll ask the dealer about it before it's too late.  Thanks.

Ok, I tend to agree with the tranny theory now after hearing several others say the same.  I've never experienced it, but I did remember reading about it once, so I did a search and came up with that thread.

Hopefully it will be a quick and cheap fix.  Good luck.

  • 3 months later...

If you have a lead foot and are taking off a little hard or the rear-end thinks that you are taking off hard the eaton-locking diff.  will lock and with it locked it will have different driving characteristics such as feeling like it is slipping the instance the rear-end is actually locking.  This could be the issue but to be honest I don't know for sure.
