poor cooling? never changed fluid? lack of fluid? big rock smashing into it causing a hole, whichs point back to lack of fluid.   i know in the dakota i had a while back (first truck i owned) it had a little rubber plug come out and pumped all the fluid.

The worst enemy is heat. It is also the hardest to detect. One of my buddies has an older Chevy with the 6.2 diesel. He went through three or four TH-700's before he discovered a small leak in the water pump that was allowing water to drain below the tranny cooler line in the radiator. The engine never ran hot and the tranny fluid never turned black.

You won't burn it up that way but you can mess up the linkage or if it is actually chifting from reverse to drive you can break some internals like when your stuck and you throw it badk and forth to rock it out.  If you messed up the linkage just cut a hole in the floorboards and shift it with a pair of vicegrips. :)thats what we do on our demo cars!!
