First fillup

Recommended Posts

Just filled up for the first time.

270 miles

15.27 gal

17.68 mpg

Total miles - 283 with 12.0 hrs = 23.58 mph avg

Hypothetically speaking, if one was to use off-road diesel.  Are there any adverse impacts to the truck (sulphur content?).  Do state inspection stations check for the red dye (hypothetically in PA).  Just asking for a friend of a friend.

Don't even think about burning red diesel in your truck!  While it will not harm the engine at all, you are opening yourself up to a huge fine.  Lately it seems that inspectors are dipping diesel truck tanks more often around here.  If even a trace of red comes up you are slapped with a several thousand dollar fine no questions asked, and you are then inviting the IRS to make you pay back taxes for any red diesel you may have burned previously, even if it was in a tractor or backhoe.  In addition, the inspectors reserve the right to stop you any other time and test again if you have been tested as positive once.  All and all, any savings you make burning red diesel can quickly be lost, plus some, if you get stopped.

They are strict here as well when checking out the diesel tanks we have.. We have two kinds one for farm tractors and one for our tractor trailer.. They are always stopping our deliveries to check the truck out to see what we are using!

Doesnt help having someone who hates you on that side of the government board

Hypothetically speaking, the only basic difference between the off-road (dyed) diesel and the road diesel, is the color and obviously the lack of tax on the fuel.  A Duramax or any other diesel will run perfectly on it.  They will also run on #2 home heating oil, which can be found at a very low price in most areas.

You might want to have your friend, tell his friend that running off-road fuel is kind of like playing with fire.  While they very rarely will check the tank on a pickup for off-road diesel, it has been done.  The fines are huge (upwards of $10000), and definitely out weigh the gains.  One other thing to think about, is that the red dye will probably remain in a detectable amount for 3--4 fillups.  Its his choice though

Heck, I must type slow.  Two guys got to this while I was typing mine up.  LOL

Here in WV I have seen several checks lately by the Department of Tax and Revenue checking for "Off Road" fuel, they have been setting along the highway and are pulling over any diesel vehicle (commercial and personal pickups) I was checked in my company truck about a year ago.

I have been told the fines are VERY steep for running this fuel.
