ABS LIGHT & SERVICE 4WD LIGHT

Recommended Posts

Not sure if anyone else has ever had this happen about 4 week's ago had a little ice storm was driving up a  road that was hilly  and truck was in 2wd almost to top started to  spin stopped  put it into 4wd and started to take off truck started sliding backwards and spinning  when it started to hook  I noticed that the (abs)light cam on after truck was moving along and not spinning light went out.I have not had this light come back on yet.

2nd Thing

We just got around 6 to 8 " of snow here and was using 4wd for most of the time I was out parked the truck at  friend's shop to go plow and cam  back went to dinner and on the way back to girl friend's the service4wd light came on  when this happened I tried to put it into 2wd  it would not switch over shut truck off and restarted  it and none of the ligts would come on and would  not shift out  of 4wd.Went inside  her house for about 25 min went to leave and all the lights were working  and I was able to swith it over to 2wd and it even went to 4low and back to 4wd high drove another 10 miles to my house checked mail backed up driveway and service 4wd light came back on and could not shift out of it let go over night  in morning was able to change  tried 4wd earlier today works and even drove for about 15 miles service light never came back on woundering if that darn switch on front rear was freezing up ????????? So anyone else have this happen. 13,600 miles on her so fare bought on 6/7/01. Also still using a qaurt of oil every 2,200 miles really becoming a pain in the butt.  Thank's great site

I've heard there is upwards of 20 things that can set a service 4wd light, so its about impossible to know for sure what it is.  But based on what I have seen on other forums, its more then likely the control head (push buttons) or the shift motor on the t-case.  Either way, be thankful for that warrenty.  $$$

Put that man on the payroll! (K-Kid!)

When I had my '99 Z71, (with autotrac), on several occasions, the Service 4WD message came on briefly. The second time I took it in, no stored codes...wasted trip. But the switch did finally fail. It was out of warranty. I forget what it cost to replace, but too much. I think hastening its demise, was the fact I would dim my dashboard instrument lights. This caused the area immediately underneath the 4x4 switch to get very hot. New truck has the old fashioned lever on the floor. Autotrac was nice when it worked, but I prefer  the back-to-basics lever.
