Oil analysis?

Recommended Posts

blackstone-labs.com Request a sample kit. They will send a container and some paperwork.

Benifits are early detection of internal engine problems and condition of your oil. They can tell you if you can go longer on the oil or if its already burnt out.

The main thing an oil analysis will do is warn you of impending engine problems through the identification of metal shavings or other stuff in the oil, such as antifreeze.  Just about every OTR truck goes through this with every oil change, and it is highly recommended for tractors or other heavy equipment.  It is fairly inexpensive, I think each test cost $15 or less.

I changed my oil at 950 miles and sent a sample to Blackstone for analysis.  There were three elements that exceeded the universal averages, copper, tin, and silicon.  The copper was 378 parts per million (ppm) (25 average), silicon was 129 ppm (14 average) and tin 12 ppm (2 average).

Blackstone Comments:

This is factory oil and to be honest, nothing surprises us in this sample.  We do think that 950 miles was an appropriate time to get this oil out of service due to the silicon, some of which may be abrasive dirt left in the block by the factory.  Copper is mostly opil additive for the product being used recently as GM's factory fill.  Tin is coming from the bearing flashings.

I've been using Titan Labs for some time.  As I mentioned in another post, the only thing that concerns me is that all three of the engines I send in for analysis seem to have high counts of Silicon.   ???
