Rear Locker

Recommended Posts

How does the locker on the new Chevy's work. Dad just bought a new 02 Chevy Crew Cab 2500HD SB 6.0/4.10's-Rear Locker, Blue, 2wd

The dealer told him that it only works at 15mph and under. That wouldnt help any then with snow on the road. He needs the locker cause we take this truck snowmobiling, and he needs all the traction he can get-2 wheel pullin 4 place or 6place in snow and on ice, kinda sucks. Anyone have one, and know how they work? Thanks

I've got the locker in my truck.  It is my understanding that this is an Eaton locking differential

http://torquecontrol.eaton.com/  From what I can tell the differential will go into full lockup if one wheel makes 1 revolution in slip.  It will do this from anywhere from 0 - 20 mph.  Any speed above that and the differential acts as a posi track.

I've had pretty good luck with mine so far.  When I had the good years on it I could light one up and then moments later the other would kick in and I could leave a heck of a pair of skids.  Can't seem to break loose my new bfg's though.  Oh well.

Anyhow, I hope this helps you a bit.  I would have probably opted for the 4 wheel just for the extra lil bit of traction, but since you've got what you've got get some good tires on it and a set of chains just in case and you should be ok.

  • 5 months later...

The Eaton Gear driven locker featured in the 10.5 and 11.5 rear-end are a very stout unit and are hand down the best posi traction, limited slip, locker on the market today.  After one rev. of slip on a given drive tire the spider gears turn both axles shafts at the same speed to get the desired traction or lack there of.

I would get some good tires as well.  I had a problem getting mine to back up with a 2 place trailer(loaded).  I am sure I could have made it happen in 2wd, but I lost patients and just locked the fronts in.

btw...I still have the steeltex on mine and think they stink in snow and ice.  Werent much good in mud either.

Good Luck
