Working slowly on a frame off restore on my 72 4X4 Chevy, finally got motor pulled thinking that it was a 350ci, but it appears that it is a 379ci. I knew it wasn't original motor, just dont know anything about 379's. Can anybody give any info. about them. Good, Bad, or Other. Problems to look for. This restore isn't for show but to look cool driving around, so would this engine be a good one to freshen up and put back in, does'nt need to go fast, but, would like to be able to smoke tires up at stop sign if I have to!!! I have a couple of 350ci engine's that I can put in so it's not like I have to use this one. Thanks

EDIT: I say that it's a 379 but not sure, just found out 379 is a 6 cly? Numbers on motor casting 14016379. Also there is a cast number on right side block 379-S. Any help please

Chevy never had a 379 and I would not place much on that casting number because it is just that and nothing more. They made a 302, and 307 and 350 and a 400 all on that same basic block design during that year. On the big block the made a 366 and a 396, a 402 and a 427 (the 396 was a 402 that year). The 6.2 diesel was 379.
