Ran a Hemi!!

Recommended Posts

Howdy Gang,

well, yesterday I finally got to run a Hemi Dodge. My truck is an 04, Z-71, 3:73 gears, open element intake, 285X75X16 tires, and Wait 4 Me tune. The Dodge was a 2 wheel drive quad cab. We ran from a dead stop up to 85 and he beat me about a length. We did a 30 mph roll on and I held him by about 3/4 length til 85. If I had short tires I could have taken him all the way. The Hemi has a good midrange and pulls good on top end. Anyhow that is the way it went yesterday. Have a goodun!!!!!

A GM owner would say that :)

But seriously, I agree with it. My brother has an 03 dodge 1500 with a hemi and while its got some good growl and top end power, it feels sluggish off the line to me. My truck is significantly heavier than his (2500HD vs 1500) and mine still jumps off the line better.

With all due respect for the Hemi, I certify them as trade-in used cars all the time, and they feel comparable to a 5.3 liter crew cab. You can tell that it's a V8, but other than that it's plain sluggish. I am sure they have great potential, and the 6.1 is a force to be reckoned with (425 hp). My Dodge friends also say that the 5.7 is not a "real" Hemi. I don't know what that means. But I'll personally take a "Torque South" tuned 4.8 over one any day.

Correct they are not real Hemi's. I like the dodge trucks just like the chevys better, but all my friends and some family members drive Hemis(Id only buy one if I got another Jeep). And to be honest, the first time I hop in my uncles I was expecting ALOT more out of it...

I just traded my '04 Dodge Ram QC with a Hemi for an '07 GMC Sierra NBS with a 5.3. Without question, my old Hemi would smoke the paint off my new GMC. When I punched the throttle on the Hemi, the front end would pickup and that truck would pull hard until I let off the gas. It was anything but sluggish, and mine was a 4x4.

But, the build quality on the Dodge is not on par with GM. Fuel consumption? Oh the Hemi is a thirsty breed. Bells and whistles? Not too many in the Dodge. Weak link seems to be the rear differential and the transmission. (Guess that would be weak links.)

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying the Hemi is better than the GM 5.3, but it's not sluggish. At least the one I had was not. Would a stock Ram with a Hemi fend off a stock GM with a 5.3? From my experience in owning both, I'd have to say "yes".

In a nutshell. I loved the Dodge Ram, but I have lust for my new GMC Sierra.

I did the exact same thing....04 Quad Cab Laramie.....I have to absolutely agree....the hemi STOCK would totally smoke the GM 5.3 STOCK, unless you have an incompetent driver in the hemi.....I raced a few guys off the line when I had mine, and there is some serious acceleration with those motors. I would also agree that DC is lacking in quality on many fronts, but as far as power and torque goes.....I tip my hat to the hemi (I know it's not the original motor). I'm comparing STOCK motors here, so any mods negates a proper comparison.

Having said that, my new Sierra and I are connecting.......

Two words for you: Torque management

What is your point? Yes my old Dodge Ram has TM, but so does my new GMC. Your point, it would seem, is moot.
