C10 Project- towing questions / engine /

Recommended Posts

I looking for a early 80's model c10, I am planning to tow with the truck, not

everyday, but I would like the truck set up so there wouldn't be problems in the

future.

Question 1

What would I need to do/install to set it up for towing?? trans cooler?? etc.

(I will be towing a car dolly/ 6x12 inclosed trailer on occassions)

Question 2

What engine / trans would be good for this, 350? I heard a 400 / 400 turbo would

be better for the truck for towing purposes truck?? I just want to do it once, and

do it right.

All information is appreciated, I'm doing my leg work before I get the truck. THANKS!!!

Lots of C10's had 350's back then and it has more than enough power. The tranny to avoid back then was the 81 to 84 700R4's that have never been rebuilt and broguht up to spec (all 700R4's as easily modded to latest version on a rebuild) Nothing wrong with a THM350 on any year. YOu want to pay attention to axle ratio relative to towed weight and where you plan to tow it. If you have a 3 speed automatic, look for a 3.42 as a compromise for your needs (do not get a 3.08) and if you have a 700R4, look for a 3.73 or deeper (OD is .7 so even a 3.73 will look tall in OD) ANd yes a aux tranny cooler is a very wise idea as heat is number one killer of auto trannies. No need to get carried away on size though. Also, even a C10 with a 305 will do a pretty good job with your planned trailer "IF" it has at least 3.73 gears in it.
