Front differential questonis/help

I have a 1998 tahoe w 92000 miles. front end makes whining/groaning noise when moving. Slight in 2wd, a little more in 4wd auto, and even more in 4wd hi. Dealer says its the front differential and quoting me 2100.00 for a jasper remanufactured unit installed. (more than i am willing to pay). I am not sure where all the shifting and thinking takes place-in the transfer case or in the differential. Any knowledge on that would be appreciated.

 

Assuming dealer is right- any suggestions on rebuilding the unit myself. I have other vehicles so I can take this one down as long as I need.

Upon searching for answers I ran into your post. I have the same problem on my 2000 yukon 5.3. 90km. I am trying to find some answers. Did you finally get it fixed. As there are very little info on what problems are when it comes to diff and transfer case..
